SNCASO SO.9000 Trident / Answer / 1:33

The SNCASO SO.9000 Trident is a mixed power plant (turbojet/rocket) point defense interceptor that didn’t achieve service. But it flew and makes an attractive subject for a model.
The kit, published by Answer ModelArt in 2010, is quite simple. It has only 223 parts, printed in just 4 pages. Printing quality is fine, using semi-gloss silver paint. The colors are solid (no weathering) and printed detail is quite basic. On the “plus” side, I’d put the assembly drawings. They take more space than the kit itself! On the “not so positive” side, I’d put the fuselage assembly method, with double formers everywhere, and the lack of a plastic canopy. As the canopy has no compound curves and the windscreen surfaces are flat, it should be doable with relative ease.

Looking forward to your build ( I have this kit and been contemplating building it as well ).

The canopy should be doable using flat parts, but I think I would prefer a vacuformed version ( at this point I am speculating ).

The good thing about this airplane is that practically everything has circular cross sections

Good luck

Isaac

Thanks, Isaac I would certainly prefer a vacuformed canopy, if it was available. Regarding the shape, yes: circles everywhere!

The plane may be experimental but it did take an air to air missile!

Good start Ricardo. I was a bit confused at first, thought it you meant the Hawker Siddeley Trident. Never mind! Good luck with the build.

Are you sure that it goes here and not in PASA section? It reminds me when I was building Rocket Launchers at 2000 year: circles, circles and circles. Very good job my friend.Tony.

@ Erik - I'd need to get another showcase for that Trident
@ Tony - ah, ah, almost Did you talk about circles?

The turbojet engine nacelles have a simple circular section. The construction has two formers at each skin section, which is not the best solution to get a smooth finish. I could have modified the kit but decided not to.

The tail section formers provided in the kit are shown in the first picture. I added some more (see second picture) to the stabilizers.

The parts fit quite well even though there are no glue tabs.

Thanks, Yoav and Isaac

@ Isaac - the trick is to cut the formers just inside the line and they fit well. As all the formers are circular, there is no problem if they are slightly rotated...

The wheels could hardly be simpler. The only “complication” is a slightly concave face.
