Dornier Arrow By Marek (1/33rd)

All,
I needed a small break before I start another WWI build so I decided to make this machine. I've always thought it was ugly but so purposeful and would have made mince meat of bomber formations and Mossies. The kit is a repaint with American markings. When I sprayed the paper after printing, the colors hazed over in places and looked really horrible. I then looked at the clear coat I'd bought and it said "Clear Flat Chalk"...who on earth would use this for anything? If it's chalky, it's not clear.
In any event, since I printed it out on my dear paper, I figured I'd build it but do some embossing of panel lines, priming and painting the resultant model with my airbrush. So I'll decide my color scheme later.

Until then, here is the "kit" with all the thicker pieces cut out and attached to 1/32nd sheet balsa. This should be fun!

Well...with quite a bit of struggle (I'm spoiled by the fit of my recent SPAD), the fuselage is going together. Multiple formers do not match the skins so I have been wrapping them with thin strips of masking tape to make them a bit bigger. I don't know if it's my cutting or not. I've never had this issue with previous Marek kit's I've built.

You can also see there are some really complex shapes on this puppy and, in the end, it really does come together. I'm especially impressed with the rear lower scoop under the aft engine. It was super complicated and hard for me to figure out how it was all going to fit. But when I started test-fitting, it then made sense. Pretty incredible, really. I'm at a loss how the interior will fit but I'll make it work.

Dang...it's a large ship! I've seen the real one in person and it's a beast.

Fun so far!

Dan

Dan,

I've never had those problems with a Marek kit. That said, I've never built this kit.

Your fuselage is coming along nicely, and yes it looks like a complex shape.

Thanks, Gary. I agree. I've built multiple Marek models and have not been in this kind of trouble. Once I fit the formers to the skins, though, it's smooth sailing!

I now have an issue on the last main fuselage part on the bottom tail section. You can see in the photos that the top section that makes the rear prop position former works sweet. However...that bottom piece is a conundrum to me. It seems to need to fold at the rear apex since there is a tab but there are also relief cuts around the tip as well. Somehow, that all needs to fit into/on the top section and I just can't figure out the geometry. I'll keep plugging away, but I'm a bit confused at this point.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Man...this thing does look cool, though.

Cheers,
Dan

I do not have experience on the matter, but what I can tell you is that the Arrow is a very interesting machine, but it look expensive!
Thank you for sharing it.

Dan,

I could only think that when it was printed, the settings were set to "shrink to fit", or something like that.

Have you found any other build threads of this aircraft on the web?

Hello Wireandpaper and Gary,

I think by looking at shots of the real machine I have a plan for the aft section. A little more homework is in order!

I have not been able to find a build on this guy, Gary, but I'll re-double my efforts. I know it's been built by someone!

It is still a pretty cool (and big) machine...Dan

Through some head-scratching and brute force, I got the rear fuselage done. Also did the nose wheel well (more detail to be added soon) and started testing the cockpit. No glue yet. Looking good thus far!

The fuselage looks nice. Obviously the additional work paid off.

That's a good start Dan. Remarkable livery and confusing for the eye .

Cheers,
Erik
