1/48 North American P-51D Mustang build

I got a message from modelers who build my BOGO model, North American P-51D Mustang about how to build this model. So I decide to make a build thread to show an easy way to finish this model.

First at all, I need you to look around all page inside kit. Parts page, Former page and instruction diagram. My design will build follow through parts label. Begjn with part 1, 2, 3 in order

Assemble begin with part 1, cut it out and glue strip into. Glue former 1a and 1b to thick cardboard to make it strength. After glue dry...assemble together like attach picture...

More to come

Nobi - I would like to participate in this. I have not got much building done recently, and my hand skills and eyesight have deteriorated somewhat, but this looks like an opportunity to see if I still have the ability. In preparation, I have printed the model out on 0.19m paper and laminated the formers and spars to 0.64mm card, which comes out to a little less than 1mm thickness, but I think it will be okay. Tomorrow I will assemble parts 1 and stand by. Don

I did "Gunfighter" a few months back in 1/100. It almost falls together.

Continue build...next us part 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Do the same with part 1. Glue strip, reinforce former and glue together. Try to not force a former into if former is not fit.

Continue on part 7. Glue strip into its place. There are 2 formers, reinforce and place into position as picture. Wait for glue dry then attach to fuselage part what assemble before.

More to come

Don Boose's Effort

I am going to try to build Nobi’s 1/48 P-51D-5-NA Serial 44-413586 in the markings of C5-T as flown by Captain Richard (Bud) Peterson, 364th Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, 66th Fighter Wing, Eighth Air Force, in Europe in late 1944. Peterson was credited with 15 ˝ aerial victories and 3 ˝ hostile aircraft destroyed on the ground by strafing.

It has been some time since I finished a paper model successfully, and I hope that if I manage to complete this – following Nobi’s tutorial – it will beak the jinx.

So far, I have done all the construction laid out in Nobi’s thread.

I printed the model on Neenah Bright White Premium Cardstock, which is 0.19mm thick. I laminated the former sheet to white 0.65mm card, making the formers 0.84mm thick, a little thinner than the optimal 1mm.

For edge coloring, I have used Tombow Art Brushes N95 (light gray), 027 (olive drab), and N15 (black); Faber Castell PITT artists pens 120 (Ultramarine – close to Insignia Blue), 223 (Deep Red – close to Insignia Red), and 109 (Deep Chrome Yellow); and a Caran d’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastel 75.00.003 (Light Gray).

The model is very well designed; the parts fit perfectly, although my cutting and scoring is not always as perfect as the model.

Images 5 and 6 show my method of cutting out card formers with the instruments of con-struction, including sandpaper wrapped around dowels from my stick-and-tissue toolbox, and beeswax to lubricate the knife blad. Image 8 is my jack-legged device for inserting formers (stamp forceps and a spring clip).

The forward fuselage is a bit lumpy and scruffy, but I deem it acceptable, given my skill level.

Thanks for the model and the instruction, Nobi Standing by for the next steps.

Don

So far so good Don. I usually find once the build is past the fuselage you're pretty much on the home stretch.

This is very interesting. It was a great thread, see the work of both guide many. Don Boose, great start. For the formers I do the same, by sections and two or three passes with the blade. And the sandpaper solves some error. The beginning is great.
