Bristol Brabazon 1/100
Pleased to have finished yet another giant model which will need somewhere to live in our home!
It's a Murph's Models kit which needs scaling up by a factor of 137.5% to give a wingspan of 700mm; nice colouring/texture and usual excellent fit of parts, and it captures the grace and powerful appearance of this beautiful aircraft. I modified the tail fin - with some difficulty - to get the smooth curve of the fairing into the top of the fuselage plus splicing in a smaller union flag, also the control surface horns (there are varying dispositions of these depending on which photos are referred to over the life of the aircraft) and the undercarriage and main doors were redesigned in more detail/accuracy. The model at this scale needs a fair few circular internal formers in minimum 1.5mm card to maintain its shape, plus a reasonable blob of lead inside the nose to balance it on its undercarriage. The air intakes were a case of persistence and careful handling but work well as designed; an obvious and considerable disadvantage of a multi prop/multi engine craft such as this is sheer repetition for intakes and propellor blades and trying to get them all the same. Beautiful build. All of the work is smooth, but to make all those intakes and have them all look great is special work.

Good work on those wing intakes.Very elegant airliner indeed.
Note "fat" wing profile-those props are turned by 8 air cooled Bristol Centaurus engines.Those take a lot of room. He-177 engine arrangement comes to mind. Last edited by Butelczynski; 05-13-2019 at 03:38 PM.

That is one spectacular model Chris. Your efforts on the improvements paid off handsomely.
The story of the full size is truly worth a read. A grand idea that entailed major logistical and expensive headaches which included the compulsory relocation of a local neighborhood to accommodate the extension of Filton's runway. The plane itself was a unquestionably a huge technological achievement and then sadly the whole project came to naught.

The Brabazon DIDN'T needed the counterweights, but the burocrats feared a plane working the control surfaces with only hidraulic power, that's why the control surface horns varied in each picture, because they where a real dead weight that degraded the working of the plane but were imposed over the Bristol company.
The plane was ordered by the goverment. The Bristol company didn't want to build it, and the british companies didn't wan't to use it. That's why, being so good tecnologically, it never went into production. https://www.airspacemag.com/history-...tee-118026858/
