De Havilland Comet 4, British European Airways, 1:100

This sounds familiar.

Yeah, this is building my own design from quite a while back. Link here. I will avoid resurrecting the thread this time as it was about the design, not build.
Designing the De Havilland Comet-4
The files are available in download section in case anyone wants to build it, beware that it is of course, imperfect and can become a source of grief :P

I never actually got round to building it when it was designed... Well I started, the fuselage was done, then I left. There was a reason I wasn't keen on finishing it: the internal engines were just unpalatable to build. Back then I failed to account for any paper thickness in the design, believing that the user will have their own ideas and trim the internal supports to their liking. That left plenty of room for error. The design itself was also cut up at the wrong places, leaving many odd shaped parts. I used to think they were a necessity, but surely simplicity is a virtue in itself.

These photos are up to where I left the build years ago. The fuselage was enjoyable, fits well and easy to build. The gear well was a source of trouble as it was not properly supported.

Coming back, I started on the wingroot. Despite being computer-designed, the method of construction leaves plenty of room for things to go wrong. Our friend Scon10 built a recoloured version here
Building the De Havilland DH-106 Comet 4
Only now (as in, when I worked on this again last year) can I appreciate how much effort he applied to produce the quality seen in his post.

The parts are small, and very unforgiving to construction errors. The formers, again, would not fit without trimming, and thanks to this the errors quickly build up, becoming difficult to fix later.

Building the landing gears though was very smooth. Only regret is not putting more details into them. Back then I had little reference material (and couldn't even fake any details).

Comet was a very beautiful jet.I'm hoping to see one for sale in RCAF livery someday.

Meanwhile I will admire your build

To finish off, here are the completed photos of the airliner. I still very much like how it looks. ALthough, build quality aside, at least they make a nice cover photo for the model.

If I ever come back to this again, maybe it's time to give it some internal details... who knows

(A question to Rick, what's the size/dimension limit for jpegs in the attachments right now?)

Lex,

The file size limit 5 megs, and the size on the forum is 640x480, and any large images will get resized

Rick

Thanks. So both limits apply at the same time? 5M in itself is pretty hard to reach on jpegs but 640x480 seemed tiny by today's camera/phone standards. I resized the photos to 1000x563 this time, and didn't notice any shrinking when I opened them in the post. That's why I checked about the dimension limit.

It's just beautiful!

I remember the original thread and Scon's build. I enjoyed your narrative in this thread and am very glad to see the completed model.

It's just beautiful!

Don

What Don said. The Comet was truly a majestic airliner and despite it's early problems the design was sound enough to continue on as the Nimrod.
