Paper planes book

Hi Everyone.
I have for some time had a book by Michael Johnson and Alan Austin titled "Paper Planes" with the subtitle "They Fly!"
I bought the book in a charity shop and one had been built and the next had been started but some parts were missing.
Have any of you heard of or tried this book ?
If so I would be glad of any help or advice you could give me. The one I have built so far flew very well but was fragile. The authors suggest designing your own reinforcement but I am not that good.
They are good looking models and I would like to build them better.

I have two copies each of his books... I both two of each to build one and keep one but I dare not destroy precious paper model artifacts.

Liz, are they scale models? Built up or profile? Maybe post some pics on here as I'm sure members with a knowledge of such models can help. Sometimes just printing on thicker paper (while watching the dreaded weight build-up) can solve fragility and strength problems.

Here are some pics... I would say they look pretty scale but build amazingly simple. I am still trying to figure out a way to copy the pages so that I can build them without ruining my books.

I have a book with the same four airplanes on the cover as the one in that first picture. It is called Classic Paper Planes instead of Paper Planes, but it is by the same people.


There are internal formers on the parts pages that the general instructions suggest to glue to thicker card and then sand as necessary to fit properly.

Parts 12, 13, and 20 are some examples in the above.

As far as scanning the pages it seems you would have to separate the pages from the book in order to get them to lie flat enough on the scanner in order to get a good scan. If your scanner can not handle the size of the pages you need to scan in sections and then use a program to stitch the separate scans together. You could scan in sections and then cut and paste the parts to fit what ever size paper your printer can handle. The main thing would be to have the pages lie flat so as to cut down on any distortion.

The book's already been started so I don't mind taking parts out. I think I'll scan each individual part in high res and label each one for reference. Then make former reinforced with balsa to allow a rolled paper rubber motor tube to run through. That way if the motor breaks it will not destroy the model.
I am not very good at building but do you think it might be worth recording and posting a build ?
