RAF roundels

Hello all,

A big bug-bear for me is having to change the roundels on my RAF /FAA kits as supplied by manufacturers and designers. Why, you ask? Well chums, a few of them are wrong. Whether it be the wrong proportion, type or colour. A couple of examples. GPM Bristol Blenheim and Maly Modelarz B25 Mitchell. The upper wing roundels in each case are modern low-visibility roundels, which can be applied on wings or fuselage.

Notice the differences here, WW2 type B and modern type B1



WW2 Type A and modern Type D



Notice the proportions and colours in each case. The last one, just about every body gets right, the Type C. Except that it was not used on the upper wing.



The Type A and C were modified with a thin outer yellow ring to produce A1 and C1 which were then used on the fuselage sides.

For those who wish there own, I have uploaded a contact sheet with corrected roundels in the download section. These range from WW1 to the present day.

I am also currently working on a contact sheet for correct RAF /FAA colours used during WW2 and if there is an interest, I will upload this too.

What was the reason to use so many variants, instead of a single standardised roundel?
Anybody an idea?

It was all to do with the changing circumstances of war. The white was reduced to tone down the visibility.

You NEVER NEVER must do a model in plastic or paper without checking the internet and/or books to find all the facts and details that you can find about that specific plane. Bernie has a wonderfull idea, and the roundel examples he has published at the very begining is enought that a modeler can use them.
Country insignias are very stable, changing each year or so. Camouflage, not so much, they tend to change depending the teather, the station and the year.
