Stinson SR-3 by Ifuente. 1:72 scale

Gents

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Here is a build thread for the Stinson SR-3 by Ifuente.

Beta building can be good fun. But it is time consuming. The final version so far is number six. There have only been minor tweaks along the way. The original model was very good.

I am largely going to be building this model as printed. The first task is to cut out and score the major parts. I will be removing some of the more visible tabs and butt-jointing things

There is a Rear Fuselage Former which I have glued to 1mm card. More from this part at a later stage.

Tim

Tim,

So you'll be printing and building version six ... which is the "final version so far" (meaning more "final" versions are coming???).

Where will this fine model be available? I am not familiar with "Ifuente".

Thanks,

Gene K

EDIT: I found "Ifuente" as a PaperModelers member here.

Thanks, Tim, for the effort that goes into providing feedback that improves the final model. The beta testers are often unsung champions of our hobby.

Tim
As mentioned earlier, that would be me. Tim has kept me in the loop all throughout the test build, but I am as excited as the rest of you about this build thread and appreciate the interest.

Just a bit of historical context - at the end of the Spanish-American War the Philippines was one of the territories ceded by Spain to the US, and remained part of the latter until independence in 1946. During the golden age of aviation Philippine aircraft were registered as NPC-xxxx at the time US mainland aircraft used N-xxxx or NC-xxxx.

The Iloilo-Negros Aerial Express Company (INAEC) was the second airline after PATCO operating regular flights, and their fleet also included 2 Stinson model U trimotors and a Sikorsky S-43.

This model represents the sole Stinson SR-3 Reliant NPC-4 (mistakenly identified as a Stinson Junior in vintage flight schedules) used by INAEC for short flights between Iloilo City and Bacolod City. While this was my intention, modifications made during the test build changed the proportions of the model, so this kitbash is a closer match to the SR-5 version with a fuselage 0.5ft longer and a wingspan 2.25ft shorter.

While this won't pass muster with rivet counters I'm calling this an SR-5, which luckily is the correct variant for recolors already in the pipeline.

Progress:

The fuselage centre section is quite busy in this build. Careful cutting is needed with the roof and windscreen.

The wings have also been formed to shape. The underside tab is a valley fold. There is also a leading edge cut-out which needs the two tabs gluing together and any excess trimming off.

The wings are fitted individually with a common triangular shaped spar. The wing underside tab is glued in place first, then followed by the top on.

The training edge should be level with the rear of the centre section.

Landing gear is done:

Although the model does not require it. I have use 1mm wire to form and strengthen the landing gear.

The wheel fairings are made up of layers laminated together.

The Stinson is finished

The rest of the aircraft was straight forward to build up with no real problems.

I have used a lot of super glue to harden anything on the delicate side

Overall the model has build up well. But care is needed with the smaller parts
