Cool V tail

Here is the tails of the aircraft. It is what is called a butterfly tail that combines both elevator and rudder function. This design was first introduced on German WW2 aircraft in order to save weight and reducing aerodynamic dragm by mixing the two functions. That configuration also made it into general aviation on the Beechcraft Bonanza.

Here it is, nothing complicated and a good fit with the fuselage.

Wing and structure

The wing is made up of an inner and outer section for the simple reason that the thickness changes at that joint.

parts:

However, I am building the model with the gear down and therefore need to cut out the landing gear doors from the bottom of the wing. Since the door is at the mating splice, I have to join the wings first before cutting the doors out.

to do that, I temporarily inserted and lightly glued the middle rib to provide a support when the wing skins are joined and you can press it down for the glue to properly adhere.

here is the wing

note:
now remove the middle rib. It will be cut up to suit later on.

Exclamation Wings continued

Here comes the second challenge if you decide to have a landing gear bay installed.

The wing spars in this design is of an I beam type. However, the rear spar goes right thru where the gear housing is located ( that is because Yoav's designs are all in the flying position and thus the internal structure is suited for that purpose ).

I added a wood dowel just aft to clear the bay opening and added a modified thinner rear spar in that position.

The rest of the structure is modified to fit with the new spar.

Smile Gear bays

The wing landing gear bays are simple white card stock with no rendering ( I just don't have the time or desire to Photoshop a detailed version ).

basically take a section of approximate proportion and bend, trim and fit in the area of the spar where the door cut out will be.

cut out the doors from the wing bottom ( put a thick card inside to prevent the blade cutting thru the upper wing skin ). Keep the doors for later on.

dry fit and trim as many times as you need.

glue the wings in place.

here is a view of the gear bay.

Work is suspended on this model for a two week road trip.

I brought a couple of simple models to build while I am on the road.

The model came out very nice so far.

I would love to build another one in 1967 brown and blue camo scheme.
example from the web of a plastic model.
