Updated information on Texman's D4Y3
Since I made the post speculating that Ray's D4Y3 was posed aboard the carrier Unryu (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/682179-post3.html), I have received more authoritative information from one of the knowledgeable members of the J-Aircraft Forum:
QUOTE: Don, The Yokosuka Navy Dive Bomber Suisei Model 33 (D4Y3) came too late in 1944 to see much use aboard carriers as only 3 Fleet carriers remained. I know that IJN TAIHO had D4Y3s at Battle of the Philippine Sea 19 - 20 June 1944. Too bad all 3 were sunk at Philippine Sea. // The famous incident where a D4Y3 pilot from TAIHO dived at the torpedo heading towards his carrier is described here: https://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/this-pilot-crashed-his-plane-into-a-torpedo-to-save-the-carrier. // The picture is not the markings of the TAIHO Air Group. Darryl UNQUOTE Yokosuka D4Y3 Suisei Model 33 Aboard a Carrier So, I think it would be a valid speculation to consider that Ray's model is displayed aboard the carrier Taihō. Don |
