VMF-214 Aircraft Survey

Hi all,

As some of you know, and have seen in person, I have been collecting, with the intention of building them, US Marine Corps paper models.

One of the more (in)famous squadrons in the Corps is VMF-214 Blacksheep
Commanded by Major Greg Boyington in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II.

I know that the Blacksheep flew F4U Corsairs during WWII.
And over time I learned that they also flew A-4 and which I didn't know, AV-8B Harriers.

My question is which designer has models of any of the aircraft I mentioned.
I know that Bruno and Carlos(Cafe) have versions of the A-4 Skyhawk, in 100, 200 and 300 scale, the last two I have, the 100 scale one is sold as part of a bundle at ecardmodels.

I might have missed any of the Corsair models that might be of the Blacksheep.

The Harrier would probably a first of a kind, if no one has yet made one.

Let me know what you know

Rick

Rick - VMF-214 initially flew F4F Wildcats at Ewa in Hawai'i and Guadalcanal in 1942.

They flew F4Us throughout the rest of WWII in the Pacific and the Korean War. They transitioned to F9F Panthers in 1953, F2H Banshees 1953-57, and FJ-2 Furies 1957 to 1962. You know the rest of the story.

If you want to pursue these other aircraft (all of which are available as paper models), I can find out the specific models and markings.

Don

Don,

This is all good news, I wasn't aware of post Korean time frame, I do know those kit exists, but do those aircraft come painted as Blacksheep aircraft?

My initial idea has been expanded, which is not a bad thing

Rick

Baa-Baa-Blacksheeps

Hello Rickstef, one model who came to my mind quickly is Nobi's Corsair; a very well designed kit and very affordable to adapt and recolor as Poor Little Lambs scheme. Bruno has ALL the models that Don Boose aforementioned. So the only thing here is research and get the three-view-drawing color schemes.

I've played around with modding I believe it was der kampliger's F-86E into a FJ-2 Fury, if I can find those files I'll resurrect them and do up a VMF-214 if I can find some pics of the scheme......shouldn't be too hard.

I also have permission to do any scheme on the F9F Panther from Ken and that can also be done, Murph did a Banshee so that one can be recolored also.........

So the Harrier would be the only one I don't know of in card...........well the USMC bird anyway.

What scale were you wanting Rick? Most are in 1/48 except for Murph's; but that's not a problem.

All scales are fine, I can go up or down with the print. Default scale is fine

Rick, go to Murph's Models, Fighters Page under United States, and you'll find what exactly you want - VMA 214 Black Sheep 1/36, at a very affordable price of USD4. Good luck.

PS. I have the whole bundle of F4U Corsairs.
