OBP Planes/Murph's Models in 1/72
I'm starting this new thread as I have quite of lot of OBP planes, as a matter of fact, all of them. But many are not navy planes. What a pity if I hide them away from this forum. There are many 1/72 builders here that are very good indeed. What I'm showing here are builds at this scale, hoping that I'll improve as I go along.
So the first is Learjet 35, printed on normal printing paper and given a coat of clear spray paint. A little weight is added at the nose cone to prevent tail-dragging. Papermate Last edited by rickstef; 09-03-2017 at 04:48 PM. |

Great build Edwin!
If you don't mind...I'd like to put these photos on Ecardmodels . |

No. 2, Learjet 23
You may have seen the other two Learjets in my 1/200 thread, so here they are, numbering them as 2 and 3.
No.2 is Learjet 23, using inkjet photo paper. The original scale says 1/61 but I doubted that it should be somewhere at 1/31 or similar as other Learjets available on Ecardmodels. More to come about No. 3 later. Papermate |

No.3 is Learjet C21 USAF which is the military version of Learjet 35. This model is printed on chrome paper (same as silver paper). To avoid messy glue job and fingerprints, I masked Saran wrap over the printed A4 paper after printing was dry. When the plane was finished, I peeled off the wrap by using sticky tapes. The shiny look is very satisfying.

Where do you get chrome paper? What do you use to "mask" the Saran wrap to the printed paper? Rubber Cement? Artists liquid mask? This sounds fascinating. Thanks |

This chrome paper is hard to come by. I remember getting them from a small printer shop as remaining stock of a no-name product. There were only a few packs left when I was there and now regret that I didn't stock up more. It was a new paper to me then as I wasn't sure if it really worked. The shop was out of business for 2 or more years by now and I'm still searching for the same paper. I have less than 20 sheets at the moment and thus treasure them very much.
As regards "masking", simply spread out Saran wrap on a glaze surface. You can use a pane of glass or just use your smooth table surface. Make sure you clear out the wrinkles but trust me it's quite impossible. Never mind. Then place the printed paper, face down, on the Saran wrap. Gently press it and lift it up and turn over. Use your hand or any roller to smooth out the air pockets. Try you best not to leave too many creases or wrinkles over the surface. It really doesn't matter if you see that the Saran wrap is not entirely smoothed out as long as it sticks to the printed side of the paper. When cutting out, use sharp blades or second best, scissors. After your model is done, peel off the wrap by using sticky tapes straight from the tape holder or wrap it around a Q-tip. In this way, you can have a very good result without cursing over the fingerprints and glue spots on wings, fuselage etc. It should work very well even on inkjet photo papers BUT not on matt ones. Douglas D-558 Skystreak in chrome paper downscaled from 1/35 to 1/72. The first two pics are build pics, and the third one shows scale, one square representing 1 CM sq. There's another red plane that I printed over one sheet of chrome paper with the Skystreak, guess which one?

These are some seriously nice little model aircraft. I really like the way you are using the "chrome" paper on some of them, it is very cool touch and adds a distinctive look.

Thanks, Jay. This Skystreak looks really cool in chrome red, doesn't it?
