Saab 35 vs F-8 Crusader

The two were never fought against each other but the compare between them is intresting to say the least.
The Crusader was developed to operate from NAVY cariers but in Vietnam was operated by the Marines from airfields.
The Marines operated the much capable fighter the F-8E as a fighter bomber with the ability to take 2 tons of bombs rockets and internal 4x20 mm colt guns.
The Crusader was called the Mig master as it killed 19 Migs 16 of them Mig 17 and 3 Mig 21's. His kill ratio was 1:6 or two times better that the Phantom F-4's.
The Draken main asset was that of an Interceptor which could reach high altitude in speed and use Sidewinder or falcon missiles or 30 mm internal gun.Since the Draken was exported only to Finland Denemark and Austriech it didn't got the chance to fire in anger.
If we can sum up Draken against the Crusader each one has it's values- the Draken has better speed and climb rate and the Crusader has a better turn rate as both use similar thrust engines - Avon for Draken and J57P20 for the Crusader 8 ton
for each engine.
The Draken had also air to ground capability and could upload bombs and rockets as well.
While some 1200
Crusaders were built 600 Drakens were built- not a small number for Sweden.
The Draken had the upper hand in service life until 2005 in Sweden and still fly in airshows ! .
For some reasons no F-8 is in a fly condition today !
Both are in 1:48 scale and the Draken is from Wilhelmhavener while the Crusader from Hobbymodel.

Hello Yair,

Very nicely build model of a great aircraft. The comparison to other aircraft of the 60's is very interesting.

Dear Shalom - thanks for your reply.
Yes I like to do these comparisions since

Saab 35 vs F-5E

The two are supersonic fighters and it is interesting to compare between them. The F-5E first flew in 1972 while the Saab 35 roots are way back at the late 50's. But the Draken production line stayed open until 1974 and the radar and avionics were upgraded to a higher level. In terms of outright performance the Saab has the better go fast -mach 2.0 vs 1.6. Better climb 40000 fpm vs 30000fpm. Better acceleration with 7.8 ton thrust vs 4.5 combind of the F-5E. Despite all that the F-5E is more agile in close dogfights due to a more modern aerodynamic dssign.
The Saab was retired in 2005 while the F-5E
still serving .
The Saab is from wilhelmshavener and F-5E from Mali modelartz - will continue.

Saab 35 vs F-5D Skylancer

The Saab 35 was the first to fly among the two in 1955 while the F-5D in 1956.
Despite the almost same engine thrust 7.8 ton for the Draken and 7.2 for Skylancer -the Swedish double delta has a clear advantage over the Sklancer - mach 2.0 vs 1.45 and climb of 40kfpm vs 24kfpm.The turn rate and agility shows some advantage to the Draken as well.
As more than 600 Drakens were built only 5
Skylancers were built and served with NASA whilr one served as the personal plane of late Nill Armstronrg.
The Draken was exported to Finland and Austriech air forces and served till 2005 in the Swedish Air force. Some Drakens found there way to USA to private users and in Europe the Draken is still flying Airshows !

Both models are in 1:48 scale and the Skylancer is from Sthalhardt .
