7 Mach 2.0 Fighters

Dear All - the race for speed was very firce in the late 50's. After the breaking of the sound barier in level flight by fighters like F-100 and Mig-19 a new generation of mach 2.0 fighters started to emerge.
Here is a group of mach 2.0 capable fighters to name :
F-104 Starfighter , Super tiger , Su -7 , Su-9 ,
Nord Grifon , Mig 21 , Saab 35 Draken.
All are in the same 1:48 scale for comparition reasons.

Will continue - Yair

F -104 Starfighter take 1

Dear All - I choose to start with the F-104 because it was the first real mach 2.0 fighter in the world. The first prototype flew in 1954 and the type entered service with the US airforce in 1958.
The plane which was desined by Kely Ghonson the genius designer was developed from the lessons of Korea war and was to have a speed and rate of climb out of this world. A mach 2.2 and 40k feet per min climb. At the begining mach 1.5 was achie ed with J65 engine but when the J79 was available it become a mach 2.0 fighter.6
The F-104 became one of the most controversal plane ever.
The service in the German airforce was very p8roblematic with many crashes and it was called the widow maker !
It was tried in Vietnam with poor results and wasn't credited
with any kill against Mig's.
The only successful version was the Italien F-104 S with 8k J79 engine and ability to carry two Sparrow missiles.
The model is from Wilhelmshavener in scale of 1:48.

Very nice Yair.

So the F-104 just beat the English Electric Lightning into service!

Do you plan to add a Lightning to your collection?

Nord Griffon 1500 Sud Aviation

During the 50's France was called land of the prototypes because many prototypes and some very advanced aircraft reached a status of flying but never reached production status - main reason was budget and not enough demand for the type.
The Nord Griffon fall to the same category.
It was designed with Atar engine without afterburner but a ram -jet was located around the engine with pipes that injected fuel that gave the plane tremendous go !
It broke mach 2.19 in 1959 and was limited by the aluminom construction of the fuselage to get higher speeds.
The plane was designed to climb fast toward incoming russian bombers and to fire a missile to kill the incoming bomber that could carry an atomic bomb.
Because of the infra structure needed and the cost it was decided that the Mirage III will be a better option - something that proved right !
So work on the type was abandoned.
The model is from Ecardmodels in the scale of 1:48 and with many modifications as cocpit landing gears and other add ones.

Su-9 Fishpot

The Su-9 was a big and heavy Interceptor that was powered by the 9 ton thrust AL7.
This engine was a gas guzler but gave the plane mach 2.0 speed and climb rate of 30 k feet per min. The first examples carried the alkeli IR missile which was more a rocket than a real missile. Later versions carried 4 Atoll missiles which was the russian sidewinder copy.
The type was produced in a relatively smal numbers and was never exported out of the USSR.
Also it never fired in anger !
It was phased out of service as more modern Interceptors came into service.
Tbe model is hobby model 102 and was decreased to 1:48 from 1:33.
