Cold War Bird Dog

Downloaded Papertigerarmaments BIRD DOG from Cold War downloads page 10.

Enlarged the uncolored one parts page to fill a letter size page then added color
before printing on 110 lb card stock.

A friend flew the Bird Dog in Viet Nam and I have been attempting to introduce paper modeling to him. I offered the download then figured I better build the thing to see if there were any build problems for a beginning paper modeler.

There were none. Simple design, good fit.

Control surfaces ( all those little ladder like rectangles) were scored to enhance the model. Photo #1.

Wing attached photo #2. One side at a time pinched together then, by leaving wing tips open, separated the inside top and lower wing surfaces at root with long tool or stick before glue dried.

Note:
I failed to color fill the cowling rectangle panel both sides prior to printing.

Photo #3. Attached upper windshield and nose piece. Allowed to dry solid
before gluing the sides and bottom edges.

Photo #4. Business card mounting strut for horizontal stabilizers and tail wheel support.
In photo upper left may be seen my feeble attempt with the tire assembly.

Photo #5. My quick method for making tires. Punch out cereal box cover cardboard proper size discs and glue ‘em together.

Wire was used to reinforced the landing gear and wing struts.

Edges were lightly sanded before paint touch-up.

Mistakenly applied acrylic gold paint to edges and had to touch up areas again with proper color.

Model wingspan is seven inches.

Unusual California rain today; snap shots were taken indoors under room lighting.

Good-looking model. I've always liked the L-19, since I spent many hours in the back seat as an aerial observer flying the south tape of the Korean Demilitarized Zone and adjusting fire for the occasional artillery shoot with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1963. Cadged another flight (in the same type of airplane now called the O-1) in Vietnam with an RAAF forward air controller in 1967.
