Mig -17 - the most nimble !
The Mig -17 was a direct evolution of the 15 and was a very dangerous plane in the hands of a good pilot.

MiG Fighters were the frontline fighters for most of the Air-forces and still operational. Glad that you have reopened the topic once again.

Mig -19S vs Mirage 3c
In the Six day war in 1967 the Israeli air force had the first real meet with the mig-19 . Although in 1966 one Mirage downed two mig -19 , one with Matra 530 air to air missile and the second with 30 mm guns only in 1967 six day war a series of dogfights between the two types took place.
The IAF pilots found the Mig-19 an easy fighter to defeat and shut down no less than 16 during the war. In comparison only 12 mig-17 were downed despite greater number that was used by Egypt and Syria. All this in a contrast to the Pakistani pilots who claimed to have air victories with the F-6 Chinese variant of the Russian mig -19 in Info-Pakistani war of 1971. Some pics of the two in 1:48 scale. Deserted mig 21 F13 to Israel part 1- 1966
The oportunity to get the mig 21came unexpectedly from Iraq. Since 1964 -1965 it was
almost impossible to operate in Egypt or Syria. In 1964 an Egyptian pilot named Heilmy Shames deserted to Israel with a piper that was produced in Egypt named Gumhouria and in Syria the Israeli secret agent Eli Cohen was catched and was hung. In Iraq the situation was more convenient to operate and the mosad agents found a pilot named Monier Radfa that was a Christian arab mig -21 pilot in the Iraqi air force. Monier was unhappy from the the Iraqi regime that was very aggressive with the Chords in the north of Iraq. The Iraqi pilots were ordered to bomb the Chords villages on a rutine basis at the time. It was decided that Monier will get a shelter for his family in Israel after deserting with the Mig -21. He gave a range of possible dates for his flight to Israel and the mosad was dealing with the escaping of his family from Iraq to Israel before the desertion took place. In Israel the airforce chief of staff Moti Hod called Ran Pecker - one of the best mirage pilots and briefed him about the secret operation. Then the waiting period started. Ran had to wait with a co pilot each day long hours in the cockpit ready for the siren call. A couple of days passed uneventful. Then in one of the days the moment came around 10:30 AM . The two mirages were scrambled toward the dead sea region toward the east. When the two mirages came toward the dead sea region they spotted a small bright silver point coming from the east. As it came closer it was observed as a mig-21 . The pilot of the mig waved with the wings and Ran told him by hands movement to follow him. Then ordered his wingman to sit on the mig tail while guns are on and hand on the trigger button all the time. The strange trio flight flew over Israel for a short duration and landed in Hazur Israeli air force base. The mig -21 was put inside an hangar and a ceremony took place inside with many VIP's. The newspaper's and radio stations announced that Iraqi mig -21 was deserted to Israel. Will be contiued. Yair |
