F-4D Skyray vs F-8U-1 Crusader - Climb competition

In 1958 the Skyray established 5 world records of climb to height. As both types served in the marine corps someone suggested to try a competition of climb up to 32000 feet
between the Skyray and Crusader.
The day of the competition arrived and many spectators gathered down below to see the
event. The climb of the two planes was more or less the same - the Skyray with 18000 and the
F8U with 21000 per minute - initial climb rate. However the tactics used by the two was
different. The Skyray pilot came as fast as he can in full AB and raised the nose in 70 degrees
up to the sky while from the other side the Crusader pilot choosed a different tactic of going
supersonic on the deck for some seconds more and then raised the nose vertically taking
advantage of the Crusader better speed. The fight was close but the Crusader won by a
smallest margin. Both types used the same engine (J57 ) with almost the same thrust but the
thick Skyray wing created more drag from the sleek F8U thin wing .
Therefore the first Crusader types were able to reach mach 1.6 while the Skyray was struggle to achieve mach 1.1 in a level flight.
The maneuverability of the two was about the same but the Skyray was less friendly in tight
maneuvers. One department that the Skyray was limited was the fuel capacity which was small in compare to the F-8U. Add to this the drag of the skyray and you can be sure that the Crusader range was almost doubled. Therefore the Skyray always carried two 1300 liter tanks under the wings.

F-4D Skyray vs F-8E Crusader - climb competition

The two fighters had the same engine while
the Crusader was 3 meters longer and had thin wings compare to the Skyray bat high drag wing.
Some more photos of the two nose up !

Talking about Skyray brings to mind Dad telling of a time during his 1960s, 70s, USN career where on a live-fire landing exercise with the Marines one or more Skyrays came in low over the beach firing those 2-inch folding fin rockets from pods under the wings. He thought that was a pretty cool thing to experience from what felt like "stick your hand up and touch them" distance.

F-11F Tiger - Strike 6 blue angels plane

The tiger was the Blue Angels plane from 1957 till 1969 for 12 long years !!!
The Tiger was the first plane that was built acording to the area rule of whitecomb and we can see a fuselage shape of a coke bottle were the body become slim were the wings attached to the body. The plane big drawback was the J65 engine that was not strong eneugh to give it a real supersonic performance and the top speed was mach 1.15 only with a rate of climb of 18 k feet per min. Only 200 were built and they served the NAVY for only 3 years between 1957 till 1960 . The plane had a small wing span and was not requiring heavy maintainance due to systems simplicity and no real radar. After retirement they served as trainers ib the NAVY.
The armament was 4x20 mm guns and up to 4 sidewinders under the wings.
In a different chapter I will relate to the Blue Angels long service !!!
The model is in 1:48 scale from stahlart .

F-11F Tiger vs F-4D Skyray

The two served in the NAVY and the Skyray in the Marines as well.
Sources claim that the Skyray was the first NAVY fighter to break the sound barrier in horizontal flight but anyway the Tiger was very close and also the Crusader.
The Tiger was designed from the start according to the area rule and with a much inferior engine J65 of 4.5 ton thrust had better speed than the Skyray with J57 of 7.1 ton thrust ! ( mach 1.2 vs 1.1 ).
The Skyray rule was that of the high altitude interception because of a better wings lift and climb rate it was the first NAVY plane to be assigned to NORAD.
The Skyray had a radar while the Tiger only a telemeter for guns. Of the two the Tiger was a better aerobatic plane because of it's nice handling while the Skyray was having some issues with a pitch up and down while crossing mach 0.9 back and forth - a very bad trait during flight.
The NAVY and Marines got reed of both before the Vietnam war started - so they never fired in anger.

Again, great post and pics. By the time I joined the Navy, the F-8's were all photo recon birds. They were still pretty awesome. Made a hell of a noise during a launch from a carrier deck.
