F-8 Crusader - Vietnam mig Master Strike 7

The F-8 Crusader was one of the best jet fighters the Americans had in the right time
when the Vietnam war started.
It had the best kill ratio against the NV Migs
of 1:6 way better than the F-4 Phantom 1:2.
Therefore names like Mig Master and Mig Slayer came to the Air......
Another popular name was the last gun fighter because of it's basic weapon which included 4x20 mm Colt guns.
Some images of the Hobby model type in 1:48 scale which is my standard scale.

Will continue - Yair

F-8 crusader vs f-4 phantom

Dear All - in Vietnam two aircraft were suited more than others to the interception role - the Crusader and Phantom.
The F-100 Super Sabre , F-102 Delta Dagger , F-104 Starfighter were not successful against Mig fighters !!!
Only the two were better significantly with a combination of armament
and Maneuverability for both accordingly .
A link below deals with the topic who is the better fighter of the two.

F-8 Crusader vs F-4 Phantom images

The Crusader is from hobby model reduced to 1:48 and the Phantom is from Ukraine young model build Academy.
The Crusader is slightly shorter and also has smaller wings but it weights 10 tons less as well so it has an excellent performance.

F-8 Crusader vs Mig - 17 and Mig- 21 NV main rivals

The Crusader main rivals in NV were the Mig-17 and 21. The 17 was the most widely used though . During a brief period in 1966 -1967 the Crusader shoot down 16 Mig -17 and 3 Mig -21 with only 3 Crusaders lost - the best excahnge rate of all the fighters in
NV of 1:6 !!!
Some images of the trio all in 1:48 scale.
The Mig-17 is from Mali the Crusader from hobby model and Mig-21is from Nobi from Thai models.

F-8 Crusader vs F-100 Super Sabre vs F-104 Starfighter

Some images of the trio.
Only the Crusader was successful against NV Mig's. The F-100 was not a match against the 17 as it was a much heavier plane and the F-104 had a turn rate of
half Nebraska so his mission was to do escort to B-52 during their bombing runs .

History that you cano't change - what if Super Cutlass in Vietnam

The F-7U Cutlass was the most radical design to go into NAVY service ever !
Our what if story begin in early Vietnam war. The Phantom and Crusader proved to be weak against the nimble mig -17 and speedy mig -21. Someone in the NAVY raised the idea to open LTV production
line to produce a Super Cutlass by making the aft section wider and longer to accumodate two J79 instead the lousy J46
with tripple the trust !!! In this configuration
a rear radar officer was back seater. The front will leg cut short.
with combind thrust of 16 ton vs the Original 5.4 ton the thrust to wieght ratio was 1.1 - so the Super -Cutlass could climb vertically and could reach mach 1.6 . A Sundowners Squadron was operated from Coral Sea carrier and right away had success against NV migs !!!
This is my extrapullation for articale post from 2000 in Aircraft modelers magazine.
The model is 1:72 Scale made from resin and alongated rear part from paper.

Fascinating WIF and great build but would the larger engines make it tail heavy? Just a thought.

Dear Mike - I think I dwell into the Cutlass history more than any other plane as the type was very different from other planes.
Even with two J79 the Cutlass will not be tail happy as it's original J46 were not that much lighter but for sure not more economical than the J79.
Look at the Me -162 as it stated with a tail wheel and moved to a front wheel without any visual structoral changes.
The Cutlass could have been a great plane if systems were transistorised , area rule was adapted and a better radar and thinner wings it could be the ultimate figher !!!
Even today he looks outstanding !!!

F-8 Crusader Last kill in Vietnam

The last kill of the Crusader took place in 22 of April 1972. A pilot named LT Gerald D.Tucker from VF-211 chased a mig -17 from behind and started to close the distance and all of the sudden he saw the pilot ejecting from the Mig -17 !!! It was the last Crusader kill and the 19th ( 16 mig-17 and 3 mig -21).
