Thank you for your post! Interesting subjects too! (I don't know why, but early US Navy jets are waaay interest me than their AF counterparts LOL).

ser 400 - the F -4 B is available for free by the title " academy of young Ukraine builders " nickthefix - Cutlass is available from Wilhelmshavener model Germany by order. The Skyray is from Ecardmodels and I am not sure if it is available now since the site closed and reopened. Faikarr - I was always at the same opinion as you - the early US jet fighters -Cutlass Cougar Furi Tiger Skyray Demon are all much more interesting than their USAF counterparts . Yair |

F9F-8 Cougar - Strike 4 first supersonic ejection 1954
In 1954 the aerobatic team of the navy the
blue angels received the cougar as replacement for the panther. The dash 6 cougar was prepared at Grumman and the members of the team had to fly the new Cougars to corpus Christi. They took off and shortly after one of the cougar pilots observed that the nose of the cougar is pitching down all the time and the speed is raising all the time. All the attempts to correct the situation didn't succeed. The mach meter showed speed of mach 1.05 so the pilot ejected. This was the first time that some one ejected at supersonic speed. Later it was found that the problem was related to the All flying tail that was hydraulically powered. After a short while the pilot was recovered and took another Cougar in which the problem was repaired and flew aerobatics again with the blue angels team. Yair |

F-4D Skyray Strike 5 - First NAVY supersonic fighter
The Skyray came as a development of Alexander Lippish who mastered in glider flying . The me-163 was
basically a delta glider with a walter rocket engine. The fiying characteristics of it were excellent but the propellant had a tendency to explode in hard landings and the pilots called it the small and nasty. Overall the impact of it was small and insignificant. Ed Heineman the chief desi gner at Douglas went further with the design and gave the Skyray bat wings with a sleek body. The contract started in 1947 but only in 1951 the first flight took place with J35 engine that was installed because the J40 was not ready yet. Even with the low power J35 the Skyray showed good potential. Now the J40 was installed first without AB and then with AB. In this type the Skyray achieved the world speed record of 753 mph at low altitude - only 7 mph below the speed of sound or mach 0.98 . It is to say that the J40 was carefully twicked for this operation. This was a great achievement for Douglas and the navy as it was the first navy jet to win the world speed record.This was a big event to the NAVY. After endless problems wit the J40 it was decided t replace it with the J57 engine which was the best at the time but weight much more and was bigger in dimensions something that required redesign of the fuselage. The one year delay cause delay of entry to service in late 1956. End of part one ! Will continue - Yair |

The Skyray was saved by the decision to replace the ill J40 with the J57. The engine replacement was the main reason for the delay of getting into service. Redesign of the body was needed in order to get the larger J57. A new ducts were added to the intakes to control the air flow to the engine . The after burner of the J57 required a change in the aft section - something that required many trials. Also the Skyray wings were thick - something that made it barely supersonic in level flight. Both the f-100 and F8U Crusader were much faster because of less drag and much thinner wings. In one department the Skyray was good - the climb rate was excellent because of the big wing lift. The Skyray also had a tendency to pitch the nose down when crossing the 0.9 mach back and forth. Some pilots called his handling characteristics ' bizarre" . Also the radar was not available at the beginning and caused delays of getting it into service. The Skyray went into service in 1956-1957 . By this time the F8U also entered service and was 500 kph faster with the same engine. Armament consisted of 4 20 mm guns in the wings and sidewinder missiles that were carried under the wings . The two served in the Navy and Marines.
They shared the same engine - J57 but the Crusader had better speed with the Skyray better climb rate. The Crusader model is from hobby model reduced to 1:48 while the Skyray is from Ecardmodels and modified with a full cockpit and rear engine compartment. Yair |
