F-104 Starfighter -the missile with a man

The F-104 was developed from the Korea war lessons. Requirements for speed and rate of climb were the most important at the time. The Lockheed company with the briliant designer Keli Gohnson designed a plane that was looking like a missile with a man . The prototypes were powered by the J65 engine that limited speed up to mach 1.5 .When the J79 become available max speed rose to mach 2.2.
will continue.
The model is WHM in 1: 50 scale.

F-104 Starfighter vs Trident SO 9050

While at the begining of the 1950's the engine technology was developed at a rapid rate at the US with engines as J57 J75 J79 in france it was the opposite . The French Aviation industry was frozen and non exsist during WW2. Company named Atar was starting to develop Jet engines based on the Jumo 004 of the German Me 262. Altough the Atar was much better then the Jumo it was not comparable with the British Avon or JE and Pratt and witney counterparts.
France was called in the 1950's the land of Prototypes with a good reason for that - nany planes some with briliant performance completed test flying programs witout funds for building them.
In order to overcome the engines problem a method of Hybrid plane that will a rocket engine for high performance together with two small Jets for landing and take off was developed.
The Trident could achieve 80k feet
and fly at a speed approaching mach 2.0 !!!
The Starfighter recieved the J79 and could reached mach 2.2 with this engine !!!
Both were able to climb very fast to intercept a bomber with Sidewinder or Matra 511 missiles.
The two even confronted in the German air force early competition stages which the F-104 won ( by bribing high ranking german officers and politicians )
The two are from WHM in a scale of 1:48.

Mike You might be right so I need to check my sources but both engines were very simillar in concept and design as axial propultion.
The BMW 003 was stronger though !
The german engines were very poor in terms of MTBF - mean time between faults. The Super Mystre atar 101 G with after burner requires overhall every 40 fly hours which was very poor compare to 100 hours of the mig 19 RD- 9 100 hours which was far from the british Avon 200 series.

F-104 Starfighter vs Mig -21 Fishbed

The only place that such an event could happen is in Indo - Pakistan conflict of 1965 and 1971since in Vietnam no dogfight between the two was reported. The trouth is that the Indian and Pakistani propoganda inflated victories so much that it was hard to determine what was realy happened. In a classic dogfight there is an advantage to the Mig-21 but the Sidewinder was better than the atoll Russian copy.

F-104 Starfighter -the vidow maker

The F-104G or the German version of the F-104 Starfighter was produced by a joint venture in Europe by Germany Holand and Italy. Almost 1500 were produced while the German airforce recieved around 900. Many systems were added among them nasar radar Litton Ln-12 inertial navigation system - something that increased the weight . Many German pilots were not trained to such a fast plane and during the first years the rate of crashes was very high - in total 116 pilots died and close to 300 Starfighters crashed. An intresting point is that in Holand Italy and Danish airforce the level of crashes was much lower.
For instance in the Danish airforce the F-100 super sabre crashed more.
