The 100 Series 1:48- F-100 , F-104 , F-105 .

The 100 Series refers to a series of Planes belongs to the USAF that were capable of breaking the sound barrier in a level flight.
Currently I will speak about the 3 above but the 101 , 102 and 106 will be added soon since this theard meant to be long.

F-100 Super Sabre in Vietnam War

The F-100 started the Vietnam war from the very beginning.
At first it was even served on a cap missions for the f-105 thuds
but was not successful at this type of mission and handed this mission
to the much more capable f-4 Phantom.
Also, when compared to the Thud it was not looking good either. The Thud
could carry twice the bomb load faster and farther than the Hun.
So , the f-105 was the main bomber over north Vietnam while the f-100
flew bombing missions over south Vietnam.
The f-100 served as a flying artillery over the jungles of south Vietnam carrying
napalm bombs, conventional bombs, rockets and also used the 4x 20 mm guns for strafing all kind of targets. It helped very much to the american ground
forces by bombing Vietcong targets in the jungles and flew more missions than
the B-17 flew over Europe in WW2 !
At a later stages of the rolling thunder ( 1965-1968 ) there was a need for reinforcement and national guards of f-100 squadrons came over from the US
to participate and help in south Vietnam.
The two seater f-100 f served at s certain point on a Wild Weasel missions against the SAM- 2 ground to air missiles but also here handed this mission
to the F-105 f two seaters that were better equipped for this dangerous type of mission.
Over 250 F-100 were lost in Vietnam, but if we put into accost the number
of sorties performed by them then the rate of loose is not high.
Toward 1970 most of the f-100 were phased out of the war theater in favor of the f-4 phantoms.
As an interceptor the f-100 was not successful and only credited with 1
mig -17 kill - but the chance to meet a Mig over south Vietnam was slim.
Included f-100 photos.

F-100 Super Sabre images

This model of Kamphfliger is in the original
1:48 scale and represent the C model where the only visible change with the D model is the wings shape at the back part which was straight - the C model participated with ANG squadrons in the war
as they came with air refuelings from bases in the states circa 1968.

Dear Isaac - the F-103 , F-107 , F-108 were not entered service and only the 107 flew while the other two stayed on mockups status. The 107 lose to the 105.
For a brief period the Phantom was called F-110 Specter but it was changed back to F-4C by USAF.
Also let us not forget the F-111 swing wing fighter bomber.

F-100 vs Rivals - Mig 19 and Super Mystere B2

The mig-19 is the from the same generation of the super sabre and super mystere.
If we count the production in China it was by far the most produced of the trio with some 8000 built.
The F-100 and MIG- 19 never encountered in a clash because of different serving periods in Vietnam war. The Vietnamese started to use the mig - 19 since 1971 - by then all the f-100 were phased out from Vietnam.
In the case of the IAF it's a different story.
The Arab air forces that used the type were Egypt, Iraq and Syria in a very small number.
In 1965 Iraq handed over the Iraqi mig -19's to Egypt as a gift.
The reason for that was that Iraqi pilots preferred the British hunter over the
mig-19.
Also , due to the small number of mig-19 , they participated less than mig -17 and mig-21 in the various conflicts.
There were a few occasions where IAF super mysteres and EAF mig-19's were close to a clash but the timing was such that both where at the other side of the border and no battle took place.
In the six day war the Mirages killed 16 mig-19's without loose !!!
The reason for that was that in this period of time the mirages were the main interceptor of the IAF.
The super mysteres downed 2 mig-21 over Siekal syrian air force base in the first day of the six day war which was a creditable achievement.
Attached are some more photos of the trio.

Super Sabre vs Mig -19 vs Super Mystere B2

The Super Sabre is the one with the largestwing span and length.
The mig-19 is the smallest one but the only one with two engines.

F-100 vs Mig -17 Vietnam 1965

The F-100 was served for a brief time as a cap for Migs that could attack the F-105 Thuds. There is a paradox here as the F-100 was nuch slower than the soeedy F-105. In 1965 their were not enough Phantoms in the battle field so the Hun used for that mission but couldn't help much as two Thuds were downed by Mig 17's and their pilots died . Soon Phantoms started to do the cap missions instead and the Phantom crews were able to kill many with a kill ratio of 1:3.
All the F-100 could achieve is a propable Mig 17 kill Compare to the Crusader 19 kills Thud 27.5 and Phantom 120 !!!
The F-100 was serving mostly in South Vietnam where Migs were not operating though .
Some images of the two side by side shows the big difference in size as the F-100 is a much bigger plane.
