Exclamation SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale

After finishing my SAAB J29 Tunnan,
SAAB J29 Tunnan-IPMS Austria 1/33 scale

I decided to build the next one in that series; the J32 Lansen.

IPMS Austria also has the J32 Lansen as well as the J35 Drakken in Austrian colors.

The kit was purchased years ago and comes in the usual large printed format of A3 paper.

Of interest is that the Lansen still had it's roots in mostly German WW2 jet aircraft concepts. It was a purpose built large attack/fighter/recon aircraft large enough to carry large radar dish in the nose and varied external loads.

Exclamation The kit

The model is printed on large A3 format paper in semi gloss bright colors.
SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6775.jpg

The instructions are in German with good figures that show where the parts go.
SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6776.jpg

I decided not to build it from their printed paper because of my previous bad experience with the Tunnan model ( paper is too soft and susceptible to glue wrinkles ).

Thus I scanned it and printed on my favorite Japanese cardstock of 160 gsm ( my last pack ). This paper is no longer available to purchase in the USA, so I'm having a friend in Japan purchase it and ship to me $$$ ).

I noted that the designation of the Lansen was only correct on the cover page as the J32, however it is wrong on every page by the designation J35E. I am surprised no one at IPMS Austria did not notice it or if they did, did not make a correction..

This looks to be an interesting build subject. I'll be following with interest.

Glad to see there is an interest in this Lansen build.

The aircraft is well known early SAAB jet plane. And because it was a purpose build plane, everything needed was designed upfront. This was different than the USA thinking of a fast aircraft that were tasked after the fact with many missions. Case in point was the F-84 and later the F-104 which were so aerodynamically clean and skinny, they could not carry sufficient fuel internally to perform many tasks.

The Lansen was a two seater front the start with a weapon officer in the back controlling the radar and many of the guided weapons ( just like the later F-4 Phantom ).

It’s a shame that the kit’s paper is too prone to wrinkle. I have their Draken kits and the version with the dragon design has a nice sheen to it. A scanned version would not look as nice unless it was printed on photo paper, but I need a lot more practice with that stuff.

Do not use photo paper. It is too thick and does not bend well.

Based on my expierience.

Good luck Isaac. It should go together nicely with your high quality Japanese paper.

I look forward to another one of your SAAB builds.

Exclamation Fuselage parts

The Lansen fuselage is a flattened ellipses in cross section mostly across the mid sections and rounded at the nose and tail end.

Here are the parts
SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6787.jpg

There is no landing gear bays to this kit which is unfortunate. I will decide later what to do, but my intention is not to make mods to this model.

The nose section of the Lansen was used to house the large radar dish. The designer of this model decided to use the dreaded petal method which I despise.
SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6788.jpg

I was toying with the idea I used previously and vacuform the nose since it is relatively simple rounded shape, but decided not to do it since this model is very simple and has limited details.

so....

I assembled the petals and then coated it with multiple layers of black paint.
SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6809.jpgSAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale-img_6810.jpg

It's a good thing it is painted black to reduce the petal look.
