Vultee Y19A? This was apparently a one-off derivative of the V-11, with a Lycoming inline engine - found on the Vultee Y-11 Wikipedia page. V-11 was a ground attack plane in the late 1930s. This re-engined Y19A flew on May 22 1940. Rigby's newspaper model was published March 1941. However, no Vultees V-11 or Y-19 in the RAF, and the tail is wrong too - the fin was more triangular . So guess this cant be the real inspiraton. Maybe he really just made it up.

Good find, Rob. That's the closest airframe I've seen to the Rigby model. Despite being mislabeled as RAF, it may well have been the inspiration for the fanciful "dive bomber". The tail is all wrong, but they often are on Rigby models. The canopy and fuselage shape are pretty close, though.

I agree, this is the most convincing. To the credit of Mr. Rigby, I guess he was more interested in the entertaining value. He had some more fanciful ships and land ships and he didn't had the access to info and references that we have today, even in quarantine!
What about the Consolidated A-11? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_P-30 https://www.google.com/search?q=cons..._AUoBHoECBAQBA Last edited by wireandpaper; 05-06-2020 at 12:42 PM. |
