Thanks Karol, DWest and Mike. That Vichy paint scheme always catches the eye. Looks like the circus is coming to town.

Great work on this Curtiss!
There's just something charming in those very old simple models. I'm sure the recolor adds a lot to the final result in this case.

Coincidental Jigsaw Puzzle
I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles on my computer. By coincidence, the puzzle I did yesterday was based on an image of your upgraded Rigby Curtiss, Don.
The image in the puzzle is a painting by Iain Wyllie of Curtiss H75-A2 Serial 295, Aircraft Number 9, piloted by Sgt George Lemare of the 2nd Escadrille of Groupe de Chasse 1/4 based at Dakar in 1941 and 1942 shooting down a Royal Air Force Coastal Command Shorts Sunderland on 24 September 1940, the same day he was credited with downing a Fleet Air Arm Fairey Swordfish during British operations against Dakar. Lemare went on to fly with the Normandie-Nieman Squadron in Russia and ended the war credited with shooting down 13 aircraft. He died in an accident in 1948. The same painting is used as the cover art for Barry Ketley, French Aces of World War 2, Oxford, UK: Osprey Publishing, 1999. A photograph of the aircraft in flight appears in Christopher Shores, et el, A History of the Mediterranean Air War: 1940-1945, Volume 3, Tunisia and the End in Africa, November 1942 - May 1943, London: Grub Street, 1999, page 15. Puzzle: https://www.jigidi.com/jigsaw-puzzle...rench-P35-Hawk Biographies of George Lemare: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Lemare LEMARE Georges - Normandie Niemen The image of George Lemare is from the Ciel de Gloire biography. Great information, Don. Thanks. I didn't know digital jigsaw puzzles was a thing. I'll have to try it out. Interesting that he flew both for, and against, the axis. I once read about a French pilot who earned ace status with the allies and the axis, but I've forgotten the details. I wonder if it was Lemare?

Don - There were at least 25 French aces, most of whom flew against the Germans in the Battle for France and then against the Allies during the Vichy period. Several of them went on to fly against the Germans with the Free French. Sous-lieutenant Jacques Andre and Marcel Albert, like Lemare, also flew with the Russians against the Germans. There may have been others, but my research resources are limited. I have ordered the book on French aces, which may provide more information.

Don, Thanks for the link to the digital jigsaw puzzles! Now I have yet another addictive pastime. However, when I did that puzzle I had a leftover piece. Is that supposed to happen?

You forgot to put it in. It belongs a couple of parts below the propeller hub, and two parts above the smoking plane.

Curt - As you have probably already discovered from Don's advice, when you put the last piece in, the puzzle reloads as a picture without the puzzle-piece lines.
Puzzler kycol has posted a lot of wonderful aviation art puzzles at the jigida site. https://www.jigidi.com/user/kycol Sorry for the diversion, Don. Don, too |
