1/33 Hurricane Mk.I, No. 306 Polish Fighter Squadron ("Torunski")

Today I'd like to show you the model I finished couple days ago. It took me a lot of time, almost two months, to complete and I have to say that I'm not really satisfied with the result. It's not my best work but still looks like a Hurricane.
The model comes from the Kartonowa Kolekcja kit and is a pretty nice design. Quite difficult, but nice. Like always, I've made some "improvements" and other, mostly small, modifications. These include new exhaust pipes, more detailed landing gear bay, etc. Obviously, the plane has been varnished too.

I've always been very interested in Spits and Hurricanes, especially the Polish fighters!! Awesome work, I'd like to try out a Hurricane in that scale one day!!

Nice work on the model.

an observation though: The propeller spinner looks like a supersonic nose of a jet. The actual spinner on the Hurricaine was much rounder. This is an error of the model designer.


a side note : I never understood the British rational of painting half the underside black. Who were they really trying to fool?

There are many schemes of camouflage and emblem placement, but the reality of combat is that if I see you, I will spray you with all my machine guns no matter what!

According to this page (https://dingeraviation.net//spitfire...-of%20Britain.), it was for the identification of RAF aircraft, so they don't pelt their own men with cannon shells.

I agree with you, I've asked the question myself!! I guess they figured they'd still be detected on radar, and the huge 12 cyl engines were mighty loud anyway.

Rational of colors and placement of ID marking always had questionable outcome.

You paint your aircraft to blend in and then you put big circles on it ( like the Japanese Hinomaru, or the British and French roundels ). Same with everyone else's military aircraft.


I wonder if anyone did a study of allied aircraft with invasion stripe shot down by friendly fire in WW2?


Anyhow, this is a topic of discussion only. The one that got it right is the one that was not shot down ( friend or foe ).

I thought camouflage was there to break up the shape, and make it harder to focus on, not necessarily to hide it. The undersides are usually visible as a shadow during the day, so painting them a specific color (like grey or blue) really wouldn't help much from underneath it. Though, the bottom camouflage is probably be more effective at dawn are dusk when the angle of the sun defuses the brightness.

Good work Zenon.I followed build of this model on Konradus some time ago and yes,it's not an easy model.All of kartonowa Kolekcja models are very stunning and realistic but also very challenging.

Coincidently I have really old 2 Hurricanes in my stash one from Model Card in the same colors as your model and one from GPM (first edition) in possibly the same colors.I should build one of the after scanning because that old card is likely useless after 30 years of storage.

Isaac, many years ago I built another Hurricane and it had its spinner slightly different to the one from KK. More accurate I think.
I no longer have that model and I can't remember its publisher but here're couple photos I saved. Butelczynski, maybe it's one of those you still have?

Good kit but God knows it needs new paint job.

Actually, this spinner is also wrong. I think in the early days of the 60's and 70's when models were hand drawn, accuracy was not as important as being able to build the model, so less sections were used.

To build a spinner today, I think either more sections are needed or vacuform them.

Alternatively, you can coat the paper spinner with super glue ( CA+ ), sand it smooth on a rotary tool and then paint it like a plastic model part .
Look here at Birder recent post on his Mustang. He shares a photo of his spinner in progress: Petie 2nd p-51, 1/33 AH

I would especially use this coating process on petal designed spinner.
