Repainting an FG Model

Many years ago I did my first and only digital repaint of an FG model. It was the Curtiss Jenny as the Navy version that is till flying out of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York.

I was not overly pleased with the yellow wings on that version but did not really try to pursue it at the time. I deemed it "close enough" and built the model anyway.

After many years, the wings faded even more, so when I took the model down from it's shelf for a yearly cleaning, I decided to try some acrylic paint to bring the now mostly white wings back to yellow. I thinned the paint with water to provide a light wash. It worked better than I had anticipated, so I also painted the roundels with a slightly thicker paint mixture.

So I'm posting the results here just in case anyone else wants to try to restore any older models. Clean the model well and seal with a clear acrylic spray first. Then very light applications of paint should work well. Afet painting, spray with a UV resistant clear cover.

The first image is from the model build when the wings were already too light.

Very nice job. Were the wires already on or did you add them after painting?

Yes I did the rigging when building original model. It did make repainting it a bit tediuos, especially around roundels where there's a lot of rigging.

Great work, Curt!

I did a historical write up on the aircraft that your model is based on for the series of inter-war USN-USMC models by Garry Gillard: US Navy and USMC Between The Wars in 1/100

The Old Rhinebeck airplane is in the markings of a JN-4HT that was assigned to Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in the mid-1920s.

It is fun for me to see old models that others have built. Sometimes I wish I had kept some of the models that I started on. Your model looks great. I am happy that your painting technique worked.
