Cool - thanks for the suggestions. The Mustang build is a few months off, but I'm planning a kit order in the near future and was just thinking of grabbing up canopies for those models I know I can't shape from flat plastic material. Therefore I've got some time to look for options - and who knows I may even research out doing some forming on my own one of these days.
At least the current build and next build (JU-87B) are both pretty straightforward canopies that I'll be able to form with flat plastic (hmm - wonder if that's a coincidence ).

I think he was saying I could get a Corsair canopy and cut out the bubble section needed to make the Mustang III canopy...

Yes Dan, that is what i was suggesting.
Tim, i do know my warbirds, and to me the Mustang III canopy in flight reminds me of the Corsair's canopy

Tim, so you know, for future encounters.
Here is a scale model version of a Corsair canopy and it does look like the canopy of the Mustang III. Rick

Just about the time Dan started this thread, I had been wondering if some of the 1/48 canopies for plastic models sold by Squadron Shop would work on some of the Marek, ThaiPaperModel, and Gremir 1/48 aircraft. Eventually, I am going to try it out, but wonder if anyone has already done so.

Dan, the bulged sliding canopy portion fitted to the Mustang III is a version of the British "Malcolm hood" also used on on various Spitfire marks. If you can find a canopy for a Mk.V or Mk.IX Spitfire it may do the trick (at least as far as the bulged portion). I know the Halinski Spitfire Mk.Vb (KA 1/2005) has a Malcom hood but I don't know if anyone ever made a canopy for that kit. There were at least two versions of the Malcolm hood - earlier ones were bulged only at the top, while later ones bulged to the sides also. The reason they were used was to improve the rear view in aircraft with a "razorback".

Interesting thought Ron. Halinski indeed did make a canopy for the vb - that's the other one I am planning on ordering

It really is cheap and effective to look at your scrap clear plastic packaging for something as small as this. Dunno why I seem to be the only one that likes this option. I only buy/make for actual bubble type canopies.
If you are uncertain about the fit, then build it with the canopy and NOBODY will know that it is not perfect. Really. Last edited by Golden Bear; 09-14-2007 at 06:51 PM. |
