Smile EE Lightning - Maly Modelarz 1974

Hello gents,

I got myself couple of vintage model kits. Because I haven't glued any model for a long time (only working on design projects) I decided to have a go with English Electric Lightning from 1974 issued by Maly Modelarz.

As many models from that era, it is far from having a good fit, but it seems to be glueable with a bit of patience

I will try to highlight the issues so anybody who decides to put this EE Lightning in the future is going to have a bit of guide.

By the way, this is a quick build (no cabin interior & landing gear) and just very minor corrections done in Corel on the scanned copy.

Please see some of the first photos.

From my experience, Maly's vintage kits has a reputation for good fit. The only think that sets it apart from a modern kit is the way it is coloured, if you can fix that in Corel you can make it look very modern. Look forward to the build.

I think this is old Geli kit redone by MM.They did quite a few kits from Geli and for most part fit of parts was very good.Problem (as always) was quality of card.Since you scanned this kit that won't be an issue.

Good luck Cybermac.
That was my first model which I built from start to end completely. I was a schoolboy. As I remember it assembled without any problems. That was a very precise era of pencil and drawing board.

front segments...

Hello gents,

Thank you all for replies!

I am glad to see that this model brings good memories!

1974 - that was a long time ago as we can see on the pages of the model which got really yellow/brown towards the edges.

Going back to the model...

The 2nd segment should be a bit higher (say 0.5-1mm), so to get a proper fit you would need to enlarge it (re-design it).
I managed to get away from re-design it because most of the gap gets covered by the cabin cover if you align all segments from the bottom.

Please see the photos

kind regards

Cybermac

rear segments...

Hello gents,

The fitting of central segments is just perfect - no problem with that

Unfortunately, the last segment is a bit tricky because you need to align the engine exhaust tubes and a middle 'plate' part.

That middle part needs to go together with another one (2nd pic) and the proper alignment is just crucial to make the whole segment glue-able and looking right.
The instruction isn't clear on that so I had to check how it look on a real airplane.

Also the last segment (0.5-1.0 mm) should be a bit taller to fit with the previous one. I had to cut it to fit with the other segment and then put a small triangular patch.

Please see the photos...

kind regards

Cybermac
