1/33 P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolt 'Miss Behave'

Another plane joins my 1/33 collection.
I've built a Thunderbolt from GPM. It's my second P-47. The first one you can see here: Republic P-47 Thunderbolt

But let's say a couple words about the model I'm showing you today. First thing is the level of difficulty. In my opinion, it's not an easy model so I would not recommend it for beginners. But if you're an intermediate or advanced modeler, don't hesitate to get it and build. It's a really nice kit with a great-looking textures.

Like all of my planes, this one has the usual improvements, modifications, etc. I mean that I often replace various parts with other things, like wires, lollipop sticks and so on. Also, I always apply the varnish on my models, so that's why they're a bit glossy and darker. But thanks to this varnish, the paper models are more durable and can survive many decades. I've been doing this since 1960s and I still have a few models that are even 30 or 40 years old and they're in perfect condition.

For the end, I've left a little bit of history. Here's the link where you can read about the 'Miss Behave' and see some interesting photos as well.

If I recall correctly, our Thunderbolt on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center has a similar checkerboard cowling, which I remember the painter complaining bitterly about because masking that pattern was a real pain in the, uh, fingertips. Of course, a pre-printed paper model avoids that problem. Looks real nice on the finished aircraft.

Thanks JCK.
The varnish I'm using is an acrylic one for the wooden elements and furniture. It's great for the paper models.

Great looking build. Really like the weathering.

Just happen to have an oil painting of this bird. Not sure where I picked it up from, but interesting that there is a model of this 8-gun bird of prey.

Nice model, but I think the (severe) over-weathering is a huge distraction. None of the pictures posted of the real airplane come anywhere close to that level of "degradation".

The workmanship is terrific.
