Piper J-3 Cub - DGA reduced to 1/100
well friends I present the model of the Piper J3 Cub, new from DGA and already available for purchase at Ecardmodels. Cub needs no comment. Designed by Jim Gausman, on a 1/48 scale, I consider this model to be superior to the already excellent Piper Cub by Fiddlers Green, with a simpler, but more precise construction. As usual, the DGA will make a large number of versions, from the models produced before the war, to the military versions. My model according to research done by Jim himself is a specimen produced in 1947 and that was in flight until 1995. There are only photos of him equipped with floats.

Aspects of build.
In this post some aspects of the assembly. It is a model that, despite having an excellent appearance when finished, is simple to assemble, but it is extremely important to follow the instructions in the instructions. For the reduction, 120gsm paper was used and many pieces were folded with the help of different tweezers. The only other detail that I put in the model were the flight cables.
Until the next Cub. |

Amazing build Pericles. At such a small scale too. Rigging on the tail adds a lot of detail. Well done.

Amazing Work!
I think I get entirely too much credit for this model. I am humbled by Péricles' ability to build a model so straight and true AND at such a small scale!
My part was only to develop the base model into something that is easy to build and true to scale. I do not have the eye for history, texture, detail and color that other members of Design Group Alpha bring to bear. For this particular livery I need to give credit to Alan Melrose who actually learned to fly float planes in this aircraft in Brooklyn NY in the late 1950s. Alan's flight instructor later landed an Aeronca Champ on the George Washington Bridge when it had engine failure. Bringing out stories like that is what makes modeling worthwhile for me! Also credit needs to be given to MacSongLi for his abilities to detail, and texture, and color the model while looking at black and white photos and working with Alan to get the hue correct. His abilities to do this in Inkscape thrill me. The support and suggestions that we all receive from all of the Group's members are what make a model, and a hobby! To Péricles point, we will soon be releasing two Flitfires, a Cuban Cub, another Canadian Cub, and the first of a series of L-4 Grasshoppers. All of which have original paint schemes, and none of them are yellow. Not to fear, more yellow Cubs will be on their way too! Last edited by -Jim G; 03-03-2021 at 08:58 PM. |

Thank you very much my friends!
And Jim again thanks for explaining in detail the history of this particular model, fascinating. I bought Flitfire half an hour ago at Ecardmodels, it's the next one that should appear on the assembly line here. |
