Exclamation Aircraft Markings website?

Anyone know of any websites that have lists and descriptions of aircraft tail codes, numbering, and other types of markings for aircraft, from the 1940s to say the 1970s?

It would be great to find such a resource.

Aerofiles Tail Codes

I know there are sites that discuss British and German WW2 markings...probably other countries also. Try Googling things like "squadron codes", "squadron markings", etc.

Here is the US Navy counterpart of the Army/USAF serials site that Ron provided: US Navy and US Marine Corps Aircraft Serial Numbers and Bureau Numbers--1911 to Present

Some time ago I reported a site with official manuals USAF, but passed unnoticed.

I missed that very valuable site, too, Orazio. I'm glad you reposted it. I have it bookmarked now. I see that it includes a very detailed site on the SM-79, as well as a lot of other most useful information.

Thanks guys, for the great posts! Most of it is information I'll eventually need, but what I was specifically looking for were sites that showed *where* these markings and things go.

What I'm trying to do is to mark up an experimental test aircraft, as if it had actually been put in service. You know, markings that show active service rather than experimental testing. I just don't know if I can figure out how to mark it "correctly" as if it actually was used.
