1/72 Bf 109E

A little over a year ago I did a minor recolor and build of Fiddlers Green Supermarine Spitfire in the livery of Douglas Bader's mount during the Battle of Britain 1/72 Spitfire Mk.V I had always intended to pair it with a fighter aircraft from the other side of channel, but didn't get around to it until now.

I decided to recreate Adolf Galland's 109E as it appeared during the BoB. I opted to stick with Fiddler's Green, even though there are more accurate models out there. I purchased the Bf 109 collection from FG many years ago, and had let my Magic Keys lapse. So, my file folder did not include Galland's BoB fighter, it might be there now, but I wasn't going to purchase the collection again just to find out. Therefore, I had to do some recoloring and modifications to the kit to get to where I wanted to go. Besides the colorizing, I had to correct inaccuracies in the model itself: the exhaust pipes needed to be moved forward significantly, and located a little lower down on the fuselage. I also had to relocate the port side air scoop/filter. The underwing radiators were just open boxes, so I pencil drew a simple grate to fill the opening.

Since the airplane is "flying", I made a clear plastic disc to represent the propeller. I decked out the Fiddlers Green base with sky and clouds, and added a portrait of Galland to match the Bader base. The build was quick and easy, with no assembly difficulties to report.

No Battle of Britain collection can be considered complete without a Hawker Hurricane, so I'm thinking about making this grouping a trio: perhaps one of the 303 Polish Squadron aces, Urbanovicz or Skalski. We'll see.

Look great in the yellow-nose markings of JG-26, "The Abbeville Boys," as Douglas Bader might have called them.

Thank you gents. It's such a simple little model compared to most of the masterpieces that we see on this forum, but simplicity can also have its rewards. I think the display stand is what elevates it (in more ways than one, LOL). I have made the decision to do a Hurricane to complete the grouping - I've already started on the recolor, in fact. It'll be a 303 Squadron ace. I'll keep the pilot a secret until the thread is posted. Once again, it'll be a Fiddlers Green model. Thanks for your support.
