I'll get back to the build shortly. Had to take care of two car issues at the same time. All good now.

Exclamation Wings

The model uses a large folded over inner card that acts as part of the framing/inner support.

the small ribs at the root gives it the proper shape. The landing gear wing portion is also glued on to the frame.

Exclamation Wings on

I replaced the wing spar with a wood coffee stirrer. It was then bent to match the wing sweep angle and super glued in place.

Notice the large external rib glued to the fuselage side. It will also position the wing

note: The main wheel well did not properly fit inside the fuselage and interference occurred with the inside framing. I had to cut and force it in ( which I did not do a good job ).

It's looking good. I like the Ye-8.

Isaac,

Some nice detailing will definitely be added with the separate control surfaces. No need to worry about the wheel wells, the rest of the aircraft looks very nice.

Cool Horizontal fins

The Mig 21 family ( and the Ye8 is one of them ) all had a fully moveable horizontal fins which pivoted just outside of the rear fuselage.

here are the parts

skins are ready
Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5396.jpg
( notice the bulges on the root of the fins? Those are covers for the attachment of the fins to the pivoting actuators on the real plane ).

inner core

I added a wood dowel to the core to glue on to the fuselage

the fins are attached

The horizontal fins/stabilizers had a spike looking object at the forward tip. These are anti flutter weights designed to eliminate the control surfaces from fluttering at different aerodynamic conditions ( common use on many Soviet jets ).

I used a wood toothpick colored using a silver Sharpie instead of paper version ( much easier ).

Exclamation Canards

The Mig-Ye8 as well as a few other Suchoi planes experimented in the use of forward horizontal control surfaces called canard ( this is a French word for a duck; as the planes using those looked like they have a long neck up front ).
As it turned out, those surfaces were of limited use for these planes. They were secondary controls unlike the SAAB Viggen which used them for primary control.

Here is the inner structure
Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5398.jpg

and the parts
Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5400.jpg
Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5403.jpg

and attached
Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5404.jpgMig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33-img_5406.jpg

notice the spike looking objects thru the surfaces? Those again were the anti flutter devices to dampen the vibration at certain aerodynamic conditions. I made them out of wood toothpicks painted silver.

Nice Isaac,

Interesting that anti flutter devices were added to the canards. I wonder if they were included on scale models for wind tunnel testing, or if it was determined by a poor test pilot that there were stability issues.

It was common use on many 60's and 70's Soviet jets to have the anti flutter spikes built into the plane from the beginning. Just like wing fences. I am sure wind tunnel tests confirmed it.
