Mig-Ye8 Model Kom in 1/33
For my next project, I decided to go back to my favorite topic and build obscure experimental planes.
This will be the Model-Kom Mig-8E ( really since it is in Russian, the Latin spelling is immaterial and is sometimes E, Ye or I for experimental and pre production planes ) Here is the kit cover and some pics of the plane. More info on the actual plane later. I found one incomplete build log of this model and that's all ( there are lots of issues with the design ). Isaac

Isaac, another very unique project.
That is a beautiful looking aircraft. I'm looking forward to another one of your detailed and visual build threads. Gary

Aircraft info
The Mig Ye8 ( or E8 ) is a derivative of the Mig-21PF ( the early model of the Mig-21 ). The idea was to place a larger radar antenna in the nose and thus it needed to relocate the engine air intake from the nose somewhere else. However, instead of having a split intake on either side of the fuselage, they decided to place it on the bottom. This is not totally unusual, but is uncommon because placing an inlet on the bottom means you must fly off paved runways ( no more grass and rough field take off ). Another issue with having the inlet on the bottom is that it shortened the wheel base and thus somewhat compromised it's ground handling.
I referred to the Yefim Gordon book on the Mikuyan design bureau aircraft Mikoyan-Gurevich Ye-8 - Wikipedia Of interest is the inlet has an internal splitter to channel the air around the nose gear. That inlet is also similar to the American F-107. However, on the 107 the inlet is on top ( another ill thought of location at the time ). There was also a need to install a more powerful engine ( Tumansky R-21F ). However, that engine was still under development and during one of the test flights had an internal failure that caused the controls of the aircraft to be lost and the plane crashed ( one of two prototype ). The project also had canard surfaces in the nose to enhance control of the aircraft ( this feature was extensively tested on many Soviet aircraft ). The project was canceled due to the many technical issues, but did lead to the development of the Mig-23 which followed the Mig-21. Isaac

The kit and accessories
This is an average complexity model. However, there are lots of confusing parts and the instructional graphics is not complete and leaves the builder to figure out the construction and placement of some parts. Also, the graphics which is monochromatic silver has multiple locations in which the graphics does not match, parts are mis identified and variable graphics are abound ( more on that later ).
Here is the kit itself instructional graphics accessories: laser frames canopy wheels You can purchase the kit and accessories here : MODEL-KOM or MIG E-8 • Isaac

Fuselage areas of build
The fuselage of this Mig is a bit complex especially due to the lower square like air intakes on the lower center section
I divided the fuselage into five areas to build and then late assemble it all. A- the nose - all rounded conical section B - the transition to the cockpit area C- center section which will support the wings D- rear section with the engine exhaust duct E- the air intake assembly On top of that will be the upper hump. I have my fingers crossed for the happy end of building this model. This is best modification of MiG-21. Try not to mess this, don't be hurry! Dividing fuselage of the model for five pieces that will be build separeted sounds a bit compilicated but have a sence. ( I prefer starting from center section and moving fwd and aft). I'll be watching your report. Cheers!

As to the method, I mostly start the fuselage at either end and meet in the middle or close to the cockpit area depending on the model design. Thanks Isaac

Fuselage nose section A
Here are the nose section parts
rolled up I added nose weights to prevent the model being a tail seater. In this case old BB shots ( must be 40 year old by now ). nose section A is done. Isaac

The joins of the segments are most visible around the cockpit exactly. You should start exactly from this area. Try!
