Ki-44 Shoki in 1/33rd by GPM

All,

Col. Boose ordered me to start this little hot rod so I figured I'd better comply!

He made a great choice. I've always liked this little machine. It was a departure from the typical design philosophy of very light wing loadings so I bet it was a fast little guy. The rendering on the kit are very realistic and almost in the Halinski range. It's colorful and it's a monoplane (I need a little break after the Albi)! Plus, I've never built a GPM model so that's a plus.

It ticks all the buttons so here we go! You can see I got really far today during our little paper card model meeting. More soon...Dan

I'm glad to see you working on this demon killer, Dan.

I don't have the kit info in front of me, but I am pretty certain that your airplane is i the markings and colors of an aircraft of the Second Chutai (red sentai tail marking), 23rd Hikō Sentai (Flying Regiment, or, literally Flying Combat Group) based at Ohta in October and November of 1944, then at Imba, east of Tokyo, until the end of the war on homeland air defense duties (as indicated by the white wing and fuselage bands).

With your skill and experience, I know you will produce a beautiful model.

Don

Dan,

Looking forward to seeing your skills applied to this Ki-44-II Hei. It's always nice to see an IJAAF aircraft.

Don, thank you for the background on this particular aircraft.

Gary

Gary is right, Don. It's really helpful and interesting to hear about these machines from folks who know. I think I shall need to read some of your text books!

Thumbs up Great

I built the Maly version of the Shoki some 20 years ago ( it has been donated since ). I loved the lines of this fighter.

The Maly version was void of any details, and I hope your build will incorporate details. The GPM version is much better.

I think I remember that Mały kit, Isaac.

Dan - Although I have a life-long interest in Japanese military and naval aviation, I've never done any primary-source research (so no text books). I have to rely on the Internet, colleagues with expertise, and my library of secondary sources, in this case, Ikuhiko Hata, Yasuho Izawa, and Christopher Shores, Japanese Army Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces 1931-1945, London: Grub Street, 2002, page 123.

Cheers,

Don

Curious on who designed this one. That may help determine what to expect from this build.

I was hoping for the Karas next, but just mildly disappointed. This looks a good choice as well.

Greg...don't worry. It's coming up soon plus I sort of lied. I love biplanes so I am planning on doing another concurrent build...your Polikarpov I-5 fighter. Don't tell anyone.

Can't get enough two-wingers...Dan

Not too exciting but progress all the same. This is the crank case and spinner back plate showing how things will fit. So far so good. One thing I'll say for the GPM paper: it would protect you from an 88mm! Delaminating multiple parts seems to be key.

Onward! -Dan
