Sometimes even I
cannot find authenticating references.
Does anyone have any information on this aircraft? I am wanting to build it, but I can find nothing to indicate it is a real scheme. Thanks for the help!

Most likely this is not real
Based on my knowledge this is not a real scheme.
The Mig-17F in North Vietnamese service did not have the national marking on the tail, but rather on either side of the rear fuselage. see a photo I took while in Vietnam Also, I don't know if they had an aerobatic display team aircraft that would be painted as such. The rest of your picture appears to be a speculative copy of the Soviet air force aerobatic team. If you have more details or other photos similar to the one you posted, it would be helpful. Isaac

The only reference I found to that scheme/number was a flight sim package (pdf attached), but depicting a two-seat version (Chinese built JJ-5). Updated - see next post.

Actually, that scheme and 518 is not a Mig 17F but a JJ-5, and not Viet Nam, but Chinese Aerobatic team:

I'm guessing fictional. One factor that suggests that is the nose serial. I haven't found a NVAF MiG-17 with a three digit one like this. They all seem to have four.
Do it anyway Texman and call it a 'what if'. Whether it existed or not, it would still make a cool looking model.

Or you could do the Red Bull Mig 17, it's red too.

It certainly is the same as the Chinese Airforce Aerobatic team.
But in Vietnamese markings - may be fictitious - can find no photographic or reference to this scheme with Vietnamese markings. But, who knows?!!!

Thanks everyone. We have all come to the same conclusion.
I also cannot find any clear references that the August 1st demo team flew single seat aircraft. So, I may just change the national markings. Don't know yet. Thank you again!

Not everything is real
In addition to our "what if" fantasy aircraft, it has become easy to manipulate photos to a "believable" status.
How about this Messerschmitt Me-262 ( Czech built version S-92 ) in Israeli Air Force post Six Day War colors? As long as it is acknowledged that this is a What if model, I like it. Isaac

If you want a red single-seat MiG-17, there's this one. It's an ealy MiG-17 "sans suffixe" though, not the more common MiG-17F with afterburner-equiped VK-1F engine. Note the different airbrakes.
