Michael, my quick search suggests that aftermarket photo etch parts were first being sold sometime in the 1990s. And I agree that computers would be a must for generating such small and accurate PE parts.

But that’s not to say the general process is new. I remembered seeing the attached article in my old 1937 Popular Science compendium titled, Amateur Craftsman’s Cyclopedia of Things to Make. The screen grab shows one page of the article from the March, 1936 Popular Science Magazine. For those wanting to see the rest of the piece, be advised that all vintage issues of Popular Science as well as Popular Mechanics are available for viewing on Google Books. It’s easy to spend an entire evening browsing through Google's library of old books and periodicals.
