Ah, memories. I’ve worked on the Hughes Racer a time or two. Not an easy airplane to work on; everything is packed very tightly. Drop-dead gorgeous, of course. I would not argue with anyone who considers it the most beautiful airplane ever made. This model captures its looks very well.

The highest possible praise. Much appreciated.

Yep, it's an unquestionable beauty from any angle. And bearing in mind it's designer, Richard Palmer, went on to design the Vultee Vanguard which would be hard pushed to win any beauty contests!

Beautifully done! The H-1 has always been a favorite of mine of this era.

So good to see these! I have a pile of Fiddler's Green air racers to assemble (going to do them all in 1/60), and nine of Arctic Skunk's 1/144 3d prints from Shapeways to paint. Just got to find a set of air racing rules I like to use them with... now I want the racers from Disney's "Planes" movies too. Does anybody make models of those?

I too have a copy of the Mendenhall book you showed, as well as a copy of Roger Huntington's "Thompson Trophy Racers" for inspiration.

Thanks Alexio.
I've got a number of those Fiddlers Green racers you mention in the build pile to be shown on here at some point.
Be sure to show your 1/60 builds down the track mate.

I HAD built some of them (the GeeBee R, Hughes racer, Rider 8-ball, the Seversky), then I moved and couldn't afford the space for my paper models (they were light but bulky in their storage boxes)... so all my paper stuff got thrown away.

People complain "you don't own electronic files like you own paper books" but I can carry THOSE a hundred miles or thousands of miles and make them again...

I have some commercial card models (a zeppelin, castles and chateaux, a couple of ships, and some of Fiddler's Green printed models) that i really want to scan first so when I mess up I can fix my mistakes. Because with hardcopies you only get one try.

I will indeed post pictures of my builds.

Yep. I, like a lot of paper modellers, are plastic converts. Though sometimes I think about going back, there's plenty of reasons I don't. One prominent undeniable fact keeps me here: I can fit the paper equivalent of a room-full of expensive plastic kits onto a single USB.

Next up is another S&P cutie: #1464 Caudron C.362. This is one of a six model Caudron racer bundle available from Ecards.
