The more I look at those racers, the more I'm convinced I-16 was influenced by them in a big way.It would not stand out much from a lineup at all with possible exception of retracting undercarriage.
Beautiful work Garry. |

Thanks Karol and I agree; even more convinced of it with the flamboyantly marked ones.

Hey guys, I found something about I-16 from the photo that Garry posted.
It is a captured Polikarpov I-16 Type 6, with a colorful scheme that an acrobatic patrol of the Spanish Air Force wore in the 1940s. They were based at the Son Bonet aerodrome, in the Balearic Islands. Source: "Las unidades y el material del Ejército del Aire durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial" José Luis González Serrano. I've always regarded the Miles M.14 Magister to be an attractive and elegant aeroplane, but hardly a racing thoroughbred. However this 'cut-down' civil version sure goes close.
Doesn't seem to be much info available for this one apart from a photo caption stating ''seen at Coventry Airport 1960''. If anyone can elaborate on this I would appreciate it. One of my repaints that I'll submit to Ecards if you would like a copy. Garry G.

Nice Magister. It reminded me of set of pictures I found in GWFM in Brampton of a Red/Yellow Tiger Moth with front cockpit turned into baggage compartment and covered with canvas with snaps. Someone in 70s did a tour around Canada with it all by himself. Apparently it took him awhile since he wasn't in a hurry and he treated it more like a Rv trip meaning longer stays if he felt like it. Must have been nice.
