Air Racing in 1/100 Scale

I recall a thread from a while back (that I apologize for not also recalling the name of the member responsible for it) that showcased a bunch of really nicely made air racing types.
I've collected quite a number of air racer models to date to which I can add my own repaints which I'll post as I build them in this thread.

We'll start with this one: Major Charles Tucker and the General Petroleum Co purchased an ex USAAF Bell P-63 King Cobra and modified it for racing. The most drastic mod was chopping a massive EIGHT FEET off each wing and cutting down the tailplane as well.
It was flown in several Thompson Trophy events but it's racing career seemed to plagued by ill luck.

This is one of my repaints and is based the S&P kit. I'll submit to Ecards if anyone would like a copy to build.

Next up is the Wedell-Williams '44'. Shown here in it's 1932 P&W Wasp Jnr powered version, it was later refitted with a Wasp Snr and in 1933, piloted by James Wedell, set a world landplane speed record of 305.3 mph.

I was originally going to repaint the Fiddlers Green model, but ended up doing my own drawings with some S&P components (engine & prop).

I love the Thompson Trophy and other Golden Age racers.

I picked up a copy of the FG model of this airplane at the IPMC auction last month.

This is a great start to what should be a very popular series.
Nice work!

Thanks Don and Dave. Thanks for looking in and commenting.

I totally get your interest in the periods you mention Don. I think what really fired my own was coming across a copy of the Charles A. Mendenhall book 'The Air Racer' in a local library years ago. I quickly purchased a copy for my own collection and most of my repaints of racing aircraft are from the pages of this great book. Fiddlers Green covers a number of these subjects and I'll certainly be featuring 1/100 builds of those in this thread.

Great work! I really like the immediate post war air racers. You are doing a wonderful job. I was going to do the J.D Reed Co. P-38 with the modified nose one day.

I have that book, Garry, as well as a lot of other books on the air races (and stuff cut out of Air Trails and other aviation and modeling magazines of the 1950s).

I am interested in seeing how this develops.
