SAAB Viggen-Fly model #41 in 1/33
I am continuing my SAAB jet fighter series in 1/33 scale.
So far, I have completed the : J29 Tunnan SAAB J29 Tunnan-IPMS Austria 1/33 scale J32 Lansen SAAB J32 Lansen- IPMS Austria 1/33 scale J35 Draken ( no build log ) J39 Grippen JAS-39 Gripen - Hobby Model # 29 also the SAAB 105 jet trainer. ( No build log ) The Grippen and the 105 were given away during the Dayton model exhibition in 2018 ( as well as many others ), So I will need to build another better versions of those ). and still missing is the J21R jet conversion of the pusher propeller fighter from WW2. That will be another story. by the way, all the SAAB jet fighters were built by me in plastic in 1/72 scale. So my next build is the J37 Viggen from Fly model. This is an old model designed pre computers and has many quirks. However, for this collection it will do fine... More info coming soon. Isaac

The model
The model is printed on A3 large format. The paper is a bit heavier than 160 gsm. However, it is very flexible and does not wrinkle when shaped. Also, cutting the parts with a scissor provides a "crunch' like response ( which I like ) and cuts beautifully.
There are instructions in Polish ( which I never pay attention to ) and lots of figures which are a must. However, you need to study the figures as those are hand drawn and as good as they are, they can be confusing at times. So pay attention to them and read them multiple times. The model itself consists of the parts as well as other sheets for the frame and thin parts. Since this is an old design ( probably the 1980's or so ), it is hand designed and laid out. The art work is multi colored black dark green, medium green and brown patches of a splinter scheme on top and light blue on the bottom. In paper, this scheme is easy, however, try to paint is on a plastic model and it is difficult. There is a Polish builder ( Mario9 ) that builds models in paper and then spray paints it all including this Viggen. I would not dare try that! WWW.KONRADUS.COM - FORUM MODELARZY KARTONOWYCH - [R/G] AJ37 Viggen - Fly Model nr 41 All the panel lines appear to have been drawn using an ink drafting pen. The construction method for the fuselage consists of internal framing integral wing spars . The sections however are mostly butt joined ( which I really hate due to the poor fit ) and some have glue strips. I did consider changing all to a glue tab, but the internal framing would have needed to be modified, so I left it as is. Figures parts frames As a whole, this would be a nice model addition to the rest of my SAABs. Build log soon. Isaac

The build log will be up shortly. Thanks guys.
Something interesting about the SAAB jets. All unique machines that are purpose built. as a side note, I did own a SAAB 900 ( but that is a car ). Isaac

Technical info
Before I start on the build, here is a bit info on the Viggen :
Saab 37 Viggen - Wikipedia Specifically this jet had a most challenging requirement at that time. It needed to operate from very short runways and roads ( 500 meters or approx. 1500 ft long ). So in addition to carrying external load for fighter, attack etc role, it had to land short on those runways and roads as well. To achieve the task, you start with a big engine generating lots of thrust. The RM8 engine for the Viggen is a license built P&W JT8D commercial engine powering the Boing 727, 737 and the DC-9 series airliners. However, Volvo ( the engine maker ) added an afterburner to the engine for added TO thrust. In addition, this aircraft has a built in thrust reverser attached into the tail of the aircraft. It consists of 3 petal shaped clam shell like doors that blocks and reverses all the engine airflow ( to a degree ). So now, the plane can stop short and even reverse taxi on the narrow runways if needed and even turn around to take off in the opposite direction. Aerodynamically, the wings are of a double delta shape. This allows for a short wingspan and also a very high angle of attack tolerance during take off and approach to land. Secondly, it employs a forward canard configuration that have built in elevators in addition to the wing elevators. Those allow the additional lift and forward stability on approach to land. As to the ordnance and equipment, the Viggen is very capable of carrying dumb and guided missiles/rockets. Reconnaissance and photography is performed using external pods lets build. Isaac

Accessories
This old model does have a commercially available canopy and wheels. Those were purchased along with the model many years ago when I visited Poland.
Canopy Wheel set. Notice they are made of wood ( turned on a lathe ). There are no laser cut frames for this model. Isaac

Fuselage parts
Lots of hand cut frames. Most are due to the but joining method so that doubles the count as well as many parts for the landing gear, cockpit and main gear, wing stub, center section framing.
Frames parts All the fuselage sections except the nose Radom have their axial seams covered up, so you don't see it on the bottom. Did I mentioned that I loved the crunching sound of sharp scissors cutting this paper? Oh, yes!!!!!!! Isaac

Nose section
The nose section is painted black ( as for a radar dish ).
I added small weights as I usually do to prevent the model from being a tail seater. However, that may not be needed for this model. I just don't take chances here. Isaac

Apparently Viggens were one of the few aircraft able to get a missile lock on SR-71s by approaching them head-on rather than from behind. They also protected one SR-71 from the Russians in 1987 when one of its engines had exploded and needed to fly at low alitude and speed to get to West Germany.
As an aside, I owned a Saab Model 96. It had a three cylinder two-stroke engine with a blistering 37 horsepower. Not easy to keep the proper gasoline-oil ratio as there were no gas stations in New York that had that fuel mixture at the pump (as they did in Europe), and the car did not have oil injection. |
