Henri Mignet"s "Le Pou Du Ciel"
AKA "The Flying Flea"
Taking a break from the detailing windows and interiors. Decided to dress this one up with some rigging and I found a pilot figure I had left over from one of my balsa models. So I forced him into the cockpit. I think he needs to loose a little weight Maybe just a tad big for this model :D I think if I'd known about this one when I was younger, I might have tried to built a real one Looks like it would have been fun

These planes had a bad tendency to crash and earned a bad reputation. In reality, the problem was that there was not enough travel in the variable wing to get it out of a dive. Reproductions that have had the design fault fixed are said to be very stable aircraft and fun to fly. Your model looks great. I really like the propeller and the pilot adds a nice touch of whimsy.

It wasn't so much the lack of travel as the lack of vertical separation between the wings. When attempting to pull out of a dive the forward wing acted as a giant slot for the aft wing increasing it's lift and tipping the whole aircraft even more nose down.
Later variations raised the front wing higher relative to the rear one and solved the problem, but not, as you said, before it earned a bad reputation as was even banned outright in the UK.

Thanks for the info. Having flown real aircraft myself, your description sounds even more terrifying. Those magnificent men in their flying machines.....

I've built both the Fiddler's Green model and an R/C scale model of the flying flea. It's a simple little model, and the flying version (from RC Modeler plans) flew great with a pivoting front wing for elevator control and rudder for turning.
Your model looks good, but it really needs a more scale pilot. Even airline pilots don't have that big of a head. |

I know what you mean! You gotta watch out for those big headed pilots:D
