Got bored waiting for a download to squeeze through the dial-up straw and scanned one of the M-50 pics of the 'open' cockpit...

The ladders might be somewhat challenging to build in paper but the seat arrangement looks fairly simply to do...wouldn't want to be boarding in a strong wind or icy day...

Did they eject downwards too like the F-104A?

According the article, they both fired downwards which makes sense (so long as it sticks to a high altitude mission profile) but there were also emergency exit hatches in the top of the fuselage...

Great news to see that this is back on the 'near future' design list...

I hope you'll pick up the TU-22 Blinder as a project. My father made several interceptions of Eygptian TU-22's that were wandering too close to the Kennedy's battle group in the early 70's. I'd love to build one for him.

The plastic kit in 1/72 scale is avaiable form Italeri. It is a very good kit. I built the Soviet missile carrier. Cool aircraft, but its flight crew hated it. It was a beast to fly and many newbies crashed on takeoff and landing. The visibility for the pilot was particulary crappy during cross wind landing since the pilot was offset slightly and the whindshield frame was smac in the center, so any angle, blocked his view of the runway. Additionaly the ejection seats fired straight down. So you where in a real doo doo flying close to the ground. Also the crew entrered the aircraft from below via the seats which hoisted them into the cabin ( like the M-50 ). Very complicated and heavy.

here is a picture of this model painted in Iraqi colors Circa 1980's wars
