Absolutely fresh blade and careful light cuts. Work slow and two passes should be good.
I used to dread cuts like that, but it's really not that bad

Nice job and for being in 1:72, the rear well looks great.

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys! Shrike, I'll definitely keep that in mind. I knew to use a fresh blade, but wasn't sure if I should go for a single cut or kind of score/cut in two or more strokes. Maybe I'll throw a quick cylinder together to practice. Upon further research, the well isn't quite deep enough (or angled properly per the original design), but at 1:72, just the idea is fine.

Some weekend updates. Got the tail attached, completing the fuselage. I scored/embossed the rudder and trim tab for the illusion of a separate piece. She's 5 1/8" long now, and will be just shy of 5 1/2" with the spinner on. Holds up to scale calculation for 1:72 scale.

Next, since I already committed to wheel wells, I began designing some replacement parts. First up, the front wheel wells. Combined the well portion from the two wing pieces and extended the graphics to the sidewalls. Simple yet effective. It's not perfectly accurate (the rear wall should be along the wingspar, but again, this is just for a hint more and for fun.

Then came the scary part. Had to slice into my freshly completed fuselage. But with a fresh blade (Thanks Shrike!) and an attitude of "It's only a model" (can anyone name that Monty Python movie?), I went for it.

A little rough but it'll be covered with the wells and wing skins. And here we are with some dry fitting.

I'll wait until I'm ready to attach the wing skins before attaching them. I have a feeling that the front edge of each well out near the spar will need to be trimmed to fit. But it's a promising start. No turning back now. Good night all!

Me? You're on your own for this one kiddo, and it's a bang up job that you be doin'. With all the extras you're adding, I keep forgetting it's 1/72nd scale. Very precise building.

Good stuff!

Mike

Thanks Mike. Just meant to show that not only are we saying that your Mitchell build is inspiring, but actually acting on it and pushing the envelope on my build skills.

No kidding. I printed out some extra parts for sprucing up the cockpit with some details, such as radio boxes and gauge panel layers - hoping to use some techniques from your build. Then when I looked at the printout, I really saw the difference between 1:33 and 1:72.
