P-51D Mustang - Old Crow - 1:72

This is the well-known Old Crow P-51D Mustang model available free from NA P-51D Mustang "Old Crow". I downloaded this a couple years ago and set it aside for when my skillset caught up with my ambition. The DGA competition a few months ago really helped me in that area.

I've rescaled the model to 1:72 to match my DGA builds (it's small but manageable, and will help save space on the shelf, esp. when I build some more modern fighters). I just found the 1:72 build thread on kartonmodell-forum which I'll use as a bit of a guide, though the instructions are pretty good. Kartonmodell-Forum | Luftfahrt | P-51D Mustang 'Old Crow' in 1:72 >> FERTIG

So without further ado, the pictures:

Started with the resized plane, printed on a single sheet of 65lb stock.

The directions call for .8mm card at 1:50 - this is about .6mm for 1:72.

I had trouble with the glue not sticking as I cut out the parts, so a lot of the formers are getting done at the base 65lb stock, and others I reprinted on copy paper and tacky glued to .5mm card.

Following the directions, starting from the front of the fuselage:

More to come! I'm toying with the idea of adding some additional detail like inset gear wells and separated control surfaces. I definitely will try my hand for the first time at a clear thermoform canopy.

Nice! I just built that one actually in the original 1:50 and its a satisfying build. I made one small change in that i replaced the prop with the wartime paddle bladed prop from marek's p-51B

Cool. You got pics posted anywhere?

According to the PDF, this is a model of the currently-flying N167F which is a repaint of Col. "Bud" Anderson's Old Crow from WWII. This one never saw combat but is painted to match the one that did (likely no longer flying). Here's a link to more information and a translation from the PDF:

Excellent build! Especially in 1/72d. Lots of good historical information, here, too.

When this one appeared, wasn't there also a very interesting Polish aerial ambulancve aircraft that appeared at the same time?

Thanks Don! Did you mean this one? It's one of three free models on that site. Plage & Laskiewicz - Lublin R-XVIb

Looks terrific so far! I'm looking forward to seeing your build progress. I have this file also, and like you, I'd do a 1/72 version.

Thanks Don! (Do you hear an echo?) :p Let me know if you need a copy of the rescaled and rearranged to fit a letter page model. And here's some more build progress for ya:

Looking at the last pic, I'm realizing that to do inset gear wells I'd have to cut into the white area on the fuselage. Gonna have to think about that, I've had not such great luck cutting into already-built cylinders. =\

Hi,
Really nice this model in 1/72 scale.
Old Crow P-51D Mustang and Lublin R-XVIb, are two models of great interest that I have always loved and I'd like to build.
I also found some participations in this forum (not very readable.., only pics :D):

Thanks Orazio - nice pics there a very clean build.

A little work done this morning over coffee. I decided last night after pouring over the Crazy Horse Aviation page's pictures that I had to give the extras a go. It wouldn't be PM.com if I didn't try. :D Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? (Was that a Bomarc quote?)

So I started off simple, with scratch building the rear gear well. I have a copy of the model printed on copy paper and used some of the main gear well graphics for the sides of the box, and just inset the surface graphic. Just the right touch.

Looks good to me attached to the fuselage.

So I'll definitely have to do the main gear wells, cutting carefully into the fuselage. I was thinking about making an open radiator flap in back, but we'll see how cutting into the fuselage goes on a part that wont be seen first. This is turning into a fun little tedious build. I blame Bomarc and his Mitchell. :p

Wow! A rear landing gear well in 1/72 scale? You're a maniac, cmags! :D Your precision in this scale is truly inspiring. Fuselage seams are flawless. Keep them pics coming.
