Within certain limits, it can be curved in both horizontal and vertical planes. Again, this compound curvature is easier to achieve on large sections than it is on small ones. Nevertheless, this forward cowling section on the DGA 1/72 Caudron Luciole is a one-piece part. With subsequent rolling, I was able to achieve these graceful curves in the x,y,z axis. Did it take time? You bet it did along with a helping spoonful of patience. I worked that cowl for the better part of 40 minutes before I got it to the shape I wanted!

Please do think me some master modeler; I certainly am not. But, I do look at paper from a different perspective than the average paper modeler. Paper is just a medium. To achieve the best results from any given medium, one must understand the characteristics and limitations of that medium and exploit those to one's advantage.

You re a master modeler, no matter what you or anyone else says. Sorry, I'm just stubborn, and you won't be able to change my mind!

Some simplified hull panels, not worked on in the horizontal yet, compared to the butcher block effect. The empennage pieces are fine the way they are. The unnecessary line would be photoshopped out, the parts that are split 1/2 way up, would be attached to form the appropriate curves. This is just trying to explain a point I am making, not show a finished model.

I very much appreciate the positive responses I have received publicly and privately.

cdavenport, I mentioned a long while ago that I thought someone
should "invent" an "English wheel" for use with paper. Do I
understand that you have? Could you elucidate?
Cheers,
Bob

I have, but it's not an original concept. I've seen other do the same thing with wood. I merely turned some steel balls on a lathe that fit in a mandrel with ball bearing mounts. My thread on the HL Hunley build has a detailed description keyed to two videos (low quality) on Youtube. Here are all three urls. thanks for asking!

That's just preliminary, I hope to have virtually no perpendicular lines, unless absolutely necessary.
