Model Art P-51 D Sky Bouncer/Winifred
As I await the completion parts of the XP-72, I needed to build myself another model. As my choice, I picked Model Art's P-51D repaint of Sky Bouncer/Winifred repainted by Ryan Short and Michael Kroll.
First decision of course was to print out green or brown. I knew though that I wanted to print out on a metallic like card stock so I did a test print to see which color came out better. Green? Or brown? Due to the darker shade of the brown, that is what I picked. The green version was just too light on this card stock. |

On the first evening, I laminated the formers and then I got the forward fuselage completed.

I then got the rest of the fuselage and cockpit done. One thing I noticed while doing the model was that some colors did not show well on this card stock. So I had the brainy idea of coloring in certain colors with colored map pencils to bring out some of the detail. I did the yellow, black, red and white. I wanted to do the blue of the US emblem, but did not find a good enough match to just shade it and not change the hue.
What do you think? If one can tell from these shots. Last edited by 3Turner; 04-06-2010 at 11:25 PM. |

Fast forward to this weekend and a little last night....I got the wings and tail surfaces on.
You can probably see more of the colored map pencils here on the D-Day stripes. Now all I have left to do is gear, wing tanks, prop and canopy. The canopy though may have to wait until I pick up a heat gun from the hardware store. When I first tried vaccuforming, I used my ceramic stove top to heat the plastic and it took way too long to get the plastic to sag and many tries before I got a good usable canopy. Tonight, it's all cutting...glueing...and sanding the wheels. Tedious..but it must be done. |

Robert,
What are those "colored map pencils" and where can I get them? My main reason to stay away from silver paper was inability to get white color on it - tried paint but it was coming out a bit clumpy - your insignia look perfect.

Thank you Orazio.
Thank you John. Quote:
But, this is them... http://www.roseart.com/products/art-...olored-pencils Another note, the silver cardstock I am using is from Office Max. I really don't think that the pencils will work on the Red River photo paper that Billy has used on several models. I think that surface would be too smooth. Thank you Jordan....and welcome to the forums. Last edited by 3Turner; 01-31-2015 at 07:18 PM. |

This is the same paper I have tried, it has a very interesting colour and surface texture.
But...I also found that it cracks on sharp folds and doesn't display coloured printing very well. Your pencil work is great and has made the difference! I would only recommend it for larger scale models (say 1/48 or bigger?) to avoid some of these issues. Good job!
