Part II: DGA Army U-1A Otter

Now that the dust has settle on the Army Heritage Weekend, here's some pics of the Jim Gausman U.S. Army Otter that I brought to the event. Jim surprised me with an email with the kit attached about a dozen days before the event, asking if I'd tried to get it done in time. I couldn't refuse. I ask Jim to keep mum about it as a surprise to Don and Kevin.

No time for blow by blow pics or tutorials on this one. Good thing too, as most of the work took place the weekend before the big day, and it shows for it. I since have apologized to Jim for "slapping it together", and for not following his expert instruction on the wing assembly resulting in the warpage you see. But it's a great model and very forgiving to sloppy hands.

This is also an opportunity to try out my wife's new camera. No SLR, but on the upper end of the "point and shoot" types with better focal length. Certainly better that the lowly camera I used in my previous build thread:

And of course the standard comparison. The real deal (which according to Col. Boose, crash into a mountain not long after this photo was taken), followed my the DGA Otter:

Craftsmanship notwithstanding, and to paraphrase a worn out cliche: "Looks like an Otter".....

Well done Jim, and thanks!

Mike

Very nice - especially considering you completed it in a weekend!

Great photos, Mike, and a great model.

Glad to see there are no sausage, cheese, and egg prints on it.

Thanks for all the good times we had with John, Kevin, and Greg this past weekend. It was great that Jim's Otter (the gestation of which I have been following for some time) could be represented by two such splendid models for its debut, and that the debut took place at one of my favorite hangouts: the Army Heritage and Education Center.

Keep 'em flying!

Don

"slapped together" or not, you did a fine job here mate.

Thanks for sharing this one. Not seen it before.

Cheers

Thank you so much for taking on this model Mike! I was not going to tell Don that I sent an Otter to Kevin either :D

My pleasure Jim, but I'm not done yet. My plate's a bit full at the moment, but I plan to revisit the Otter sometime in the future. Your kit screams "scratch-built interior" to me.....

There has been some talk of a permanent Paper Modeler's display at the Army Heritage and Education Center. A couple of Otters (not to mention Jim's Beavers) would be very appropriate there if it comes to pass.

Mike, your "slap together" is better than my most careful build! Well done!
