GeeBee R1 by Rafal Ciesielski - Part 1

This is my first build thread on the GeeBee R1 by Rafal Ciesielski. I would not say this is the easiest model to build but is a nice challenge. Pictures are up in the gallery as well as a build diary here. A big thanks to SwampFox who told me how to get the images into a thread from the gallery.

OK. I have given a comparison of the two types of paper I use. The first image, which I ended up using, was printed on HP 52lb paper. The second was taken of the same model but printed on Wausau 110lb paper. You can see a huge difference. So for this model, due to the bright reds, I chose to go with the HP 52lb paper

After cutting out parts 1 and 2 I joined them incorrectly. All the join pieces should go on the inside. I was not sure about this so built it again and I show this image later on.

This is my modeling buddie. He helps me on most of my builds, when he's not sleeping.

This is how part 1 and the join piece (the bit with the teeth) should look. It should be inside part 1, as shown:


Here is part 1 and 2 joined together the way they were meant to:

This is part 3 under a very little weight while the glue dries. I use old blade boxes that have the used blades as my weight. This keeps everything flush while the glue is drying:



Finished this bit. The overhang is not as bad as it looks. It is more a light shadow but a little sanding will fix this:

Nice to see you have jumped in my friend. Ok, you made a mistake {that wont happen again } Has for the colour difference {Saturation} sometimes this huge difference is down to the coating on the card/paper - there's NORMAL and BRIGHT WHITE, the latter giving a stronger colour output. The thickness of the card can have some impact too, but usually the coating plays the biggest part. Great start all the same ! I will follow this build with great interest mate.

Tis the way to go mate, we are all still finding new ways of doing things, and not one of us goes bye without something going wrong.... BUT, the biggest plus side to this hobby is that you can print it again till it's to your liking Your build thus far is nice and clean !

ooooh goody!!!

I built this kit about a year ago.
But never finished it...
my skill level wasn't there yet, and the engine parts and wheel skirts were just too much for me!

I also had a lot of trouble shaping the rear part of the fuselage and cockpit area.

I have been planning to give this kit another try
but I will be upscaling it (I like big planes!)
I also have the Modelik kit which I want to try.
(although it looks like the same kit to me?)

if you run into any troubles, I might be able to help with a few photos of my half completed kit.
but I think someone else here also did this build, and did it quite well if I remember correctly.
There might be a build thread if you look.
