Ansaldo A1 :the plane of the man who killed King Kong , 1/200
1/200 paper model from Fitter.
This model depicts Balilla #5 of the Kosciusko Squadron, a unit of 17 American volunteer pilots flying for Poland against Soviet forces. The Kosciusko Squadron was active from 1919 through 1921. Nine of the pilots were awarded the Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest award for valor. Aircraft number 5 was flown by Captain Merian Cooper, and in this aircraft, Cooper was shot down while on a ground attack mission and imprisoned. Despite the fact that the Bolsheviks had placed a bounty on the American pilots, Cooper was able to convince his captors that he was really an enlisted man forced to fight, rather than an officer-volunteer. Avoiding execution, but imprisoned for nine months, Cooper later escaped back to Poland, and soon after returned to America with the rest of the Kosciusko pilots. Cooper went to work for RKO Radio Pictures, as a film writer, producer, and director. Millions of people around the world have been influenced by Cooper's film work without knowing it: he co-wrote, co-directed, and had a cameo (as one of the attacking airplane pilots) in the classic 1933 adventure film, King Kong. |

The Kosciusko Squadron is an especial interest of mine, so being able to write the product description copy for Captain Cooper's Balilla was a great pleasure. Jan, that's another lovely build! Your 1/200 models simply take my breath away. Wyvern |
